In 1977 their founder members Jan and John Shailes got together with friends at their home to enjoy spinning and to pass on their skills.
As the numbers grew, the group decided to join the Berkshire Guild in 1979, which was based in Sonning Common.
Subsequently, the Newbury based Kennet Valley Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers was formed and has been meeting for over 40 years.Â
They have a Facebook page and are affiliated to the Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.Â
The Guild demonstrates and exhibits at local events and shows such as the Young Farmers, Lambourn and the West Berkshire Museum and Whitchurch Silk Mill.
They have been involved in historical events like the 200th anniversary of the Newbury Coat.Â
The Guild meets on the first Saturday of every month in Greenham, Newbury, between 10:30 – 4pm.
Their day starts with a coffee or tea and a chat. Members bring along their current projects and can take part in mini workshops.
The talented and expert members are very willing to help and support beginners.
They bring a packed lunch and in the afternoon they enjoy a talk or demonstration by an invited speaker.
Subjects range from hand dyeing, embroidery, split ply braiding, weaving, spinning silk and many more.Â
If you have an interest in weaving, spinning or dyeing they’d love to meet you.
They are a very friendly and welcoming group of people and can make arrangements to accommodate everyone, whatever your needs.
They offer 2 free meetings to see if you like us.
If you would like to join the Guild, all membership enquiries should be addressed to kvgtreasurer1@gmail.com
