Aldermaston

Welford is a charming village and parish nestled in the delightful south-west Berkshire, right in the beautiful valley of the river Lambourn, just a cosy six miles north-west of Newbury on the way to Lambourn.

Welford and Wickham

This friendly parish stretches over five miles from north to south, with its southern edge touched by the London to Penzance railway line.

With the river Lambourn  flowing through, along with the scenic countryside, the parish is also crossed by the M4, the A4, and the B4000 (the historic Roman road, Ermin Street).

The parish is made up of six  settlements: Welford (the largest one, home to the church), Wickham (just a stone’s throw from Welford village across the M4, where you’ll find a chapel, a school, and a village hall), Easton, Weston, Hoe Benham, and Halfway.

Since the late 1890s, the village has enjoyed the service of the Lambourn Valley Railway, which added to its charm.

Welford had its own station until 1960, when the line sadly closed to passengers and regular freight, although a branch to RAF Welford kept going until 1973.

This picturesque area is set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Perhaps most notably, Welford Park is home to the lovely snowdrop trail.

It also serves as the wonderful location for The Great British Bake-Off.
