The Pottery

The Pottery at Hewins Wood Farm, which was established in 2021 by the talented ceramicist Andrew Hazelden, is nestled in the charming village of Bradfield in Berkshire, just an easy drive from the M4 motorway.

Andrew has a wonderful background in ceramics, having studied at the Epsom School of Art and Design.

He had the privilege to learn from acclaimed ceramicists like Mary Wondrausch and Alan Caiger-Smith.

His journey in pottery began at Aldermaston Pottery in Berkshire in 1984, where he mastered the art of tin glaze earthenware and reduction fired lustre.

With a special blend of Italian Duruta and Spencroft clay, Andrew

Using a blend of Italian Duruta and a Spencroft clay, Andrew hand-paints the oxides onto the tin glaze in the delightful maiolica tradition.

Tin oxide has been used as a whitener in glazes since ninth century Persia and lustreware also has its roots in this period.

These two techniques travelled through Spain and the rest of Europe becoming popular in England around the eighteenth century.

These  techniques made their way through Spain and across Europe, becoming quite popular in England by the eighteenth century.

Andrew is delighted to be creating stunning reduction fired lustreware.

This special technique, which involves silver and copper paste, requires a reduction of oxygen during firing to achieve that breathtaking iridescent surface.

He’s also passionate about sharing his knowledge and teaches regularly at The Pottery,  Hewins Wood.
