Stockcross is a small,  wide spread village set in the west of the county, running alongside the historic Ermin Street.

A beautiful village, just to the west of Newbury, with its own thriving community, including a popular village hall, a village shop and post office, as well as a highly regarded primary school.

The nearby pleasant market town of Newbury offers a comprehensive range of shopping, leisure and educational facilities.

Newbury is the headquarters of Vodafone UK and offers a railway station on the direct line to London Paddington (fast train to Paddington has an approx. travel time of 41 minutes).

There are also excellent road links via the A34 and M4 motorway, a convenient commute for those working in Reading, Oxford and Southampton.

The village is still very much associated with Sir Richard Sutton’s Settled Estate, 1800 hectares of mixed farming with livestock and arable crops.

This village, whose growth was largely due to the Sutton estate, and which was partly in the tithing of Church Speen.

There is notably The Vineyard  at Stockcross, where they are known for their extensive wine cellar.

Newbury Station is on the direct line to London Paddington (fast train to Paddington has an approx. travel time of 41 minutes).

 AMENITIES & FACILITIES

There is a village Hal with a Recreation Ground with a children’s playground and football pitches, which is owned and maintained by the Parish Council.

The village shop offers bed and breakfast and has a lovely seating area where you can enjoy delicious coffee, cakes and snacks. 

A wide range of cards ad provisions are available alongside the usual post office facilities.

There is also Sutton Hall which is the busy village hall, hosting regular events from jumble sales to Christmas pantos to village get-togethers.

The Sutton Hall offers modern, well-maintained flexible facilities.

The main hall has a large entertainment area with a stage.

From the main hall there is direct access to the small hall or meeting room, with its own bar area.

The small hall also has it’s own entrance and may be used separately from the main hall.

There is access to a modern well-equipped kitchen, with cooking facilities, from the main hall or side entrance.

There are disabled toilets and disabled parking.

The Sutton Hall has a resident Caretaker to open and close the premises.

FOOD & DRINK

The Deanwood Golf Course sits just off the A4 / A34 on the B4000.

In addition to a golf course, it has a therapy centre and conference facilities.

Continuing along the B4000 towards Stockcross is The Vineyard Hotel, which has been run by the local Michaels family since 1996.

This fine-dining hotel specialises in wines and boasts 30,000 bottles, 3,000 bins, 100 wines by the glass.

It has an award-winning spa and restaurant.

SCHOOLS

The village has a small voluntary aided Church of England primary school.

 COMMUNICATION

Stockcross has a very strong sense of community, as evidenced by the local Grapevine magazine.

There is a village notice board in the garden of the post office.

The village hall has a notice board.

 CHURCH

Stockcross has a brick-built church (St John’s) erected and endowed by the vicar, the Rev. H. W. Majendie in 1839, St. John’s Church.

 TRANSPORT

The Number 4 bus goes from Lambourn to Newbury  calling at Stockcross post office.

PARISH COUNCIL

Stockcross is part of Speen parish Council.

 A BRIEF HISTORY

Stockcross is a village in Berkshire, England.

 The village lies to the west of Newbury in the civil parish of Speen and the district of West Berkshire.

Close to the cross-road in the middle of the village were the stocks hence the name Stock-Cross, which were removed in the early 1980s.
