Discover the fun history of Stir-Up Sunday!
In 2024, Stir-Up Sunday falls on the 24th of November, the perfect day for families to come together and make Christmas pudding.
This lovely tradition dates back to Victorian times, when families would unite five weeks before Christmas to stir their Christmas pudding.
While there are countless recipes out there, the classic version typically includes 13 ingredients to symbolize Jesus and his disciples.
Most historic recipes for Christmas pudding would have included these standard ingredients: sugar, suet, eggs, flour, breadcrumbs, mixed spice, raisins, sultana’s, candied peel , cinnamon, allspice, milk and alcohol.
Family members would gather around to take turns stirring the pudding with a wooden spoon (which represents the manger) from east to west, just like the journey of the Three Wise Men, all while making a wish.
It’s about tradition!
Everyone takes a turn to stir the pudding mix, for each person involved is able to make a special wish for the year ahead.
Often little trinkets were added to the pudding before wrapping, steaming, and storing it away until it’s time for Christmas Day celebration!
