Hazel Reindorp from Oddings will introduce you to the simple techniques and tools of bookbinding. 
 
You will make a photo album with a clever structure which will enable you to remove and replace pages and allow you real scope to be artistic and flamboyant in your design, if you choose.
 
Although they will be making a photo album the structure could be used for other purposes such as sketchbook, or journal, and they will discuss how you might choose to change the materials to better suit the book for another purpose. 
 
In this session you will: 
 
  • Learn about paper grain and its relevance.
  • Learn to cover boards. Measure and cut paper and board Tips and Tricks when using Glue Make your own photo album to take home with you. 
 
What to expect:
 
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with crafting and binding experience.
 
You will learn in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment.
 
You must have good grip in both hands as they will be using sharp knives. 
 
What to take/wear:
 
All tools and materials are supplied, and you will take home a set of comprehensive instructions so that you can repeat the process at home.
 
Who is your tutor:
 
Hazel Reindorp is founder of Odd Bindings, a local business that makes traditionally handbound journals, notebooks, photo albums and other stationery bits and pieces.
 
All their books start as large sheets of paper and board and are cut, folded, glued, and sewn using traditional tools and methods, so each book is entirely unique.
 
Hazel also enjoys working on commissions, to create a book specific to requirements and teaching this ancient and diverse craft to all ages.

The base 

The Base opened on Friday 8 February 2019 in partnership with Greenham Trust and the Corn Exchange. It became a registered charity in 2022 (charity no. 1199188) and is dedicated to improving access to the arts whilst bringing quality visual art to the local area.

Situated in a purpose-built arts and craft building, The Base’s £1.7M venue was designed by Sutton Griffin Architects of Newbury.

The space comprises of a 110sqm gallery, artists’ studios and a workshop for participatory classes.

There is also a café facility managed by Honesty Café group.

Striving to be a flagship visual arts venue in West Berkshire, The Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year 54 exhibition launched the inaugural gallery programme.

Displaying some of the best wildlife photography from across the globe, the exhibition comprised of 100 photograph across 7 categories and is renowned for attracting millions of visitors around the world every year. 

The Base is also home to 8 visual artists and craft makers as well as Open Studios West Berkshire and North Hampshire, who present their annual INSIGHT exhibition at The Base every May.
