Paul Presents meets Rev Matt Clark
Rev. Matt Clark is an assistant curate in the West Downland Benefice.
Rev Matt is about to be ordained on the 27th June 2026 at Reading Minster Church and he drops into to tell us about his journey from working in journalism to becoming an assistant curate.
The West Downland Benefice comprises six parishes.
Each parish possesses its own unique character and heritage church, yet together they form a united and welcoming community.
Becoming a Church of England vicar involves a rigorous process of discerning a calling, theological training, and ordination.
It requires being an active church member, recommendation by a bishop, training at a theological institution, and serving as a curate before taking charge of a parish.Â
Initially, discuss your sense of calling with your local parish vicar.
While there is no upper age limit, it is more common to begin the process before 55, as the selection and training can take several years.
Training tuition fees are usually covered, and support with living costs is available.
