Paul Presents Kennet Opera

Kennet Opera was founded in 1994 to bring grand opera and concert song to Newbury and the surrounding areas.

Opera is at the heart of what they do, and they staged a major production, sung in English, every year between 1994 and 2019.

From 2020 to 2022 they were still able to present concerts, outdoors and then indoors too.

From 2023 they’ve gratefully returned to staged opera productions.

They remain a singing family, united by their love of opera.

And they want to hear from singers, musicians and people from all the arts and crafts behind opera.

They’re offering a rare chance to see Susannah by ‘the father of American opera’ Carlisle Floyd.

Based on the biblical tale of Susannah and the Elders, it’s reset in New Hope Valley in rural Tennessee, against the backdrop of a 1950s church revival meeting.

It is the story of a young and innocent woman falsely accused of immorality by her village neighbours — god-fearing, revivalist, and also lascivious and vengeful.

Susannah is one of the most-performed American operas of all time.

With a dramatic plot, reflecting the febrile atmosphere of anti-commmunist witch hunts, it’s a dramatic two-actor packed with great music, and not to be missed.

They’re’re returning to the Great Hall in Newbury’s Shaw House. Book here.
