Tales from beyond the grave
Paul Presents Friends of Newtown Rd Cemetery with Roz Clow
Paul Shares Exciting News with Friends of Newtown Rd Cemetery and Roz Clow

The Friends were established by Newbury Town Council in 2009 as part of their collective mission to reopen Newtown Road Cemetery to the public.

The History Research Group got started to explore the lives of as many folks buried in the cemetery as they can.

With over 8,000 people resting there, it’s a big but rewarding task!

Their group meets every couple of months to share discoveries.

Some of their members are tracing their own family histories, contributing photos and documents to enrich their archive, all of which will be showcased on their website.

If you have loved ones in the cemetery and want to share some information with them, please download this form and fill it out.

You can then send it to Ros Clow with your contact details.

The Friends group, formed in partnership with Newbury Town Council, have been working to bring the cemetery back to its self after its closure in 2000, due to health and safety concerns.

Over the years, their dedicated Friends have taken on various projects like helping with nature surveys and creating informative display boards with pictures.

They also have a full memorial recording programme.

This effort will help thempreserve the information on all the memorials online so everyone can easily access and cherish these memories.

Their History Research Group is on the hunt for old documents and certificates,  uncovering the stories of every individual buried there.

If you’d like to become a member or have any details to share about those laid to rest there, they’d love to hear from you!

Feel free to visit the cemetery!

They’re open daily (except on Christmas Day) from 10 am to 3 pm.
