Jana's Recycling Journey Through West Berkshire

‘Welcome to the new edition of this Guest Blog. I am a full-time working mum of 2 boys and a published novelist of ‘The Ninth Cross’ by my pen name J. Karst. I get involved in trying that little bit I can in saving the environment for the future generations.’

The sun is here! In case you need help in remember what that is, it’s the yellow, warm circular thingy in the sky.

I have been very good in box stuffing and each crisp packet recycling box was near to 20kg mark. In the end a sizable shipment of 110Kg went to TerraCycle this week.

Though recently the recycling has slowed down so I hope that it’s because people made the right choices, not that it gone to landfill. Hopefully soon I can go to the sustainable living Market to raise the awareness of recycling.

However, reducing food waste is as important as plastic. I have been looking at what I can do in that area and found out that fried banana peel can taste like bacon. In our household we thankfully have an additional recycling facility called the dog. She is brilliant at munching through non chicken bones as well as hoover up any food crumbs off the floor.

Only recently I made a slow cooker beef rib soup broth. The dog is always keen to recycle the bones which are given to her in the garden to protect any staining of the carpet. Its funny how much she enjoys chewing on it, shooing anyone that comes near. Even a bumble bee is given a stern bark if he decides to come too close.

Initially she threw her leftover bone into the rose bush to hide for another day but was very cross when the neighbour’s cat discovered her hiding spot. In the end of an exhausting guard of her hiding spot, she decided to burry it. Her initially dig was pathetic but in time she got to be a pro at burying them.

The only way you know that it’s a secret hiding spot is when you approach it, you notice her eyes burning into your back. That’s why it was surprising that after giving her the bones, she wasn’t protecting any spot.

The mystery has been resolved today. I was so pleased to see the sun that I threw the curtains open only to jump a second later as two bones appeared from nowhere. With the surprise I jumped backwards only to trip over my dog.

I now have a very displeased pup who needs to find another hiding spot…
