This one-day, onsite Japanese calligraphy workshop is designed for complete beginners and those with a little experience.

No prior calligraphy skills or knowledge of the Japanese language is required — everyone is welcome!

Ever dreamed of creating beautiful Japanese art?

In this special summer experience, you’ll learn the fundamentals of Shodo — the meditative art of Japanese calligraphy — and use your new skills to design your very own uchiwa (traditional fan).

The morning session will focus on the basics:
    • Brush control and posture
    • Ink flow and essential strokes
    • The origins and beauty of Japanese characters

After lunch, you’ll move into a more expressive stage, applying what you’ve learned to transform a blank fan into a meaningful and artistic keepsake.

Throughout the day, you will discover how calligraphy brings mind and body into harmony — an experience that is calming, mindful, and creatively fulfilling.

What begins as a simple art practice becomes something deeper:
a connection to culture, spirituality, and inner balance.

This workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to:
    • Discover a new creative outlet
    • Immerse themselves in Japanese culture
    • Learn a soothing and mindful practice
    • Create a beautiful piece of art to take home

All materials are provided — just bring your curiosity and creativity! Relax, learn, and unleash your inner artist as you design a beautiful, expressive fan.

Please note: Materials are not included in the booking fee. A £5 materials charge (covering the fan and ink supplies) is payable directly to the tutor.
