Thatcham Festival 2022

Thatcham Festival has a number of events at various venues.

They  are delighted to announce that Thatcham Festival takes place from Friday 14th October to Sunday 23rd October, 2022. It will have events suitable for all ages and will take place across multiple venues in Thatcham.

The annual Thatcham Festival takes place in October and offers the opportunity for people to get creative in a workshop, learn something new at a talk, explore our local area on a walk and enjoy a range of performances including music, drama and dance.

There are also exhibitions and fairs celebrating local leisure activities and crafts.

Many of these activities are offered to the public free of charge or for a small booking fee.

The highlight of Thatcham Festival will be the chance to hear from internationally acclaimed author Robert Harris.

An exhibition of paintings and drawings in a variety of media by local amateur and professional artists.

Rewilding, Connectivity and Verge. Free

Rewilding of gardens and roadside verges are hot topics presently as we encourage wildlife back into habitats.

Simon Claybourn, West Berkshire Wild Verges Project Officer, will paint a picture of some current, broad concepts in the ecological world.

We’ll also look at things we can do as individuals to help wildlife, as well as a local project ‘The West BerkshireWildVerges Project’ – and how it all links together.

Well-known local choir Watership Cantabile invite those of all ability and age to join in a singing workshop with their young and exciting Musical Director, Bethan Williams.

Refugees as Rebuilder. Free

On zoom. 2-4pm

15th October

Refugees and those displaced by conflict and climate disaster possess an immense wealth of resilience and lived experience.

This means that they are ideally placed to be rebuilders – positively contributing to their host countries and countries of origin.

This Zoom event enables people to meet with refugees from diverse backgrounds, and
those who have worked with them, to hear each other’s stories.

It will be hosted by the UK charitable programme ‘Refugees as Rebuilders’.

Come and enjoy a wonderful fun day for all the family.

Activities include apple crafts, children’s activities, storytelling sessions, community stalls, Morris Dancers, and local choirs.

The Community Orchard at the Nature Discovery Centre is a lovely, natural space and contains local heritage fruit trees and hedgerows for foraging.

Simon Jardine, best known for
his wonderful animal illustrations,
offers a special Festival BOOK workshop for all ages.

Learn to draw a selection of animal characters, and maybe even the odd dinosaur!

Then, pick your favourite and create a full colour masterpiece with paints.

Learning lots of transferable art skills with practical hints and tips, you’ll leave with a piece of art to be proud of.

Dementia Friendly West Berkshire.Free

Thatcham Town Council Office and Cricket Club, RG18 3HF

To support the opening of the ‘Sensory Garden’, located by Thatcham Town Council Offices, Dementia Friendly West Berkshire will be raising awareness of dementia, signposting to organisations in West Berkshire that may be of use to those navigating a journey with dementia and providing more information about the garden.

They will be hosting The Virtual Dementia Bus, an interactive experience which shows what living with dementia could be like – slots must be pre- booked so please do so by emailing Victoria.Rowland@ AgeUKBerkshire.org.uk

As Editor of Sporting Life, where he worked for 34 years, Geoff interviewed and wrote about the legends of horse- racing.

To tie in with ‘Focus on Thatcham’ exhibition at West Berkshire Museum (page 3), local historian Dr Nick Young takes a brief look back at the whole history of Thatcham from the Stone Age to the present.

Milestones in the development such as the birth of the modern settlement will be discussed.

A walk through Greenham Common’s history

Start from Greenham Common Control Tower, RG19 8BZ
A captivating walk through history and rejuvenated landscape.

The walk is just over 2 miles. Visitors will take in the Control Tower, memorial, the remains of one of Europe’s longest runways, once a taxiway for nuclear bombers, the ‘fire plane’, the infamous bunkers which housed 96 cruise missiles and much more!

Festival Leisure and Craft Fair

St Mary’s Church and The Broadway

The Festival Leisure and Craft Fair provides the perfect start to your festive shopping with a selection of handmade products such as cards, candles, jewellery, papercrafts, handbags, woodwork, leatherwork, paintings and much more, all made by local people.

The Barfield Handbell Ringers will add to the atmosphere by performing at 11am and 12pm from the Church balcony.

On The Broadway, local clubs and organisations will showcase what their organisation does for Thatcham’s community.

Bring the children and have your photo taken with our Autumn Fairy.

At 10am, children’s author Anita Loughrey will read from her books as well as help children create their own stories.

There will also be performances by Breaking Barriers Theatre Classes and Sing Louder Choir too.

Guided Wildlife Walk of Bowdown Woods

Meet at Bomb Site car park, Burys Bank Road, RG19 8DA

Join Wildlife Trust Manager, Roger Stace for a gentle walk of 2.5 miles around one of BBOWT’s flagship woodland nature reserves in its stunning autumn colours.

Learn about the amazing wildlife of this important woodland and how the Wildlife Trust manages the site mirroring techniques humans have used in the woods for centuries.

Note: there are some steep slopes and steps, and paths can be uneven and muddy so please bring suitable footwear and clothing.

Blue Plaque Unveiling

Meet at Burdwood Community Centre, RG19 4YA

Following a public vote, the Town Council’s Heritage Working Party is delighted to be unveiling its 5th blue plaque in commemoration of Lieutenant Colonel Vernon Watkins Urquhart, who was the first commander of the Ordnance Depot based off Station Road and who died outside his house during a Luftwaffe night sortie on 16th August 1940, by a bomb intended for the depot.

Introducing the Mayor of Thatcham’s Festival highlight of last year, Thatcham Thrives Dance Gala will be a spectacular showcase of regional dance talent.

Audiences will be treated to performances of street dance, hip hop, ballet, tap, contemporary and musical theatre.

Featured schools include Just Ballet, Kennet School, Linden School of Dancing, Queen Anne’s School, Chance to Dance Stars CIC, Elibah School of Dance, Dance Phaze, Dance with Sonia Brown, Elevate Dance Academy, The Downs School, Steps Ahead, Leighton Park School and MF Dance.

Performances at 4.30 pm or 6.30 pm.
