Emotional Wellbeing with Caz Campbell / Colours

This week’s blog is about colour! Seeing colour, especially your favourite ones, uplifts you. Colours have various subtle effects on people. When asked what their favourite colour is, my daughters often say “all the colours of the rainbow”. When you see rainbow colours in the right order, it can evoke memories or feelings of being a child – playful, happy and innocent. Rainbows also symbolise togetherness and cooperation as well as positivity, creativity and joy.

On Valentine’s Day, I did a surprise rainbow party (for the 4 of us in the house!), so I put up decorations for them all to find in the morning. We baked rainbow meringues, cheesecake and cookies. We played games, made crafts, dressed up, wore wigs and danced around the house to a playlist of songs with colours in the lyrics! It was a lot of fun and a lovely treat after all the home-schooling.

Here are what some colours can make us feel:

Red: Blood and fire! An intense colour that is packed with emotion ranging from passionate love to anger and aggression. Studies show that red can create physical effects such as increases in blood pressure, libido, respiratory rates, metabolism, enthusiasm, confidence and energy levels.

Orange: Symbolizes energy, vitality, cheer, excitement, adventure, warmth, and good health. Studies show that orange can increase hunger, energy, socialisation, mental activity, contentment and understanding.

Yellow: The colour of attention, caution, toxicity but also cowardice. On the other hand yellow can also have the power to de-stress and re-balance. If you imagine being outside under a mass of grey clouds then a breeze unveils a warm yellow sun, you may feel a wave of bright optimism.

Green: The colour of life, nature and energy. Green is associated with growth, harmony, freshness, safety, and environment, but weirdly also associated with money, ambition, greed and jealousy. Green is soothing, relaxing and helps alleviate anxiety, depression and nervousness.

Blue: Sky and sea! Blue is associated with open spaces, freedom, imagination and sensitivity. It also represents meanings of depth, trust, wisdom and confidence. It can bring calm and coolness and helps with balance and self-expression.

Purple: The rare occurrence of purple in nature made it historically one of the most expensive colour dyes to create. Purple is therefore associated with royalty, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple can uplift spirits, calm the mind and nerves.

In my book “Donkey on a Waffle”, there are tasks to try for each topic. Some examples for colour are: Do something different with colour this week, whether it’s wearing, noticing or eating. Be brave and have confidence in wearing colour in your clothes or accessories – bright socks, colourful jewellery etc.
