    EVENT DETAILS

Love our restaurant? Our team share the most popular starter, main course and dessert from this season, and teach you to confidently re-create some of our most popular restaurant dishes at home. We’ll share some of our kitchen secrets including ‘partition preparation’ where most of the cooking is done before your guests arrive leaving you to spend more time at the table and less time in the kitchen.

    • Morning involves demonstrations and practical sessions making some of the components that make up some of the restaurant dishes
    • You will be fully capable of creating a Woodspeen classic starter, main course and dessert
    • Discuss what makes up great taste in a dish
    • Where possible we’ll be using produce from our own vegetable plots to start to create some of the classics
    • Enjoy your starter with your fellow cooks around The Chef’s Table for lunch, and your show-stopper dessert with some tea before you leave. The tutor will masterclass the main-course for you to re-create at home, and the main course you have made will be packed up for you to serve at home.

    Course includes:

    • Arrival at 9.45am for tea and coffee and course introduction
    • Enjoy lunch around our Chef’s Table
    • We will keep you refreshed with tea, coffee and mineral water throughout the day, and your show-stopper dessert can be enjoyed with tea in the afternoon
    • Finish course at 3pm with the main course made on the day to take home

To take away: Main course made on the day and all notes and recipes.

    Painting with a Palette Knife

    02/11/2020
Micklems Farm, Knowl Hill Common, Knowl Hill, Berkshire RG10 9YD

    Painting with a Palette Knife

There is nothing more seductive than to apply thick paint freely with a knife. This workshop will tap into that joy. Bits of Palette knife painting have been used by many famous artists in the past. Turner and Constable used it for highlights in their landscape paintings. However it is only more recently that this technique has been used exclusively to make paintings.

This workshop will initially be experimental so that the students can find out about the kind of marks that are available with the palette knife and how to use the knives they way they find most useful. We will then do a very basic, simple still life picture using only the palette knife. After completing this we will look at the paintings of artist Nicholas de Staël and attempt a small abstract picture in his style.

Basic materials will be provided but please bring your own palette knives. A disposable palette would also be useful. Acrylic paints are good for palette knife work and I will bring a binder to add to them to make them more pliable. I hope this workshop might break new ground in your painting as well as being fun and creative.

Includes – Basic materials. Tea, coffee and biscuits.

Terms – Fee is payable on booking. If, having booked, you cancel your booking, we are unable to offer a refund. However, you may nominate someone else to attend the workshop or class in your place by notifying us using the contact page on the Micklems Farm website.

    FRIDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2020

    9.00 AM – 2.30 PM

    A yoga and cookery class.

Kate Butler and Ozlem Graves are teaming up to offer a wholesome day of delights.  You will start off with a dynamic vinyasa flow yoga practice followed by a light, Middle Eastern mezze cookery class, which will be served as lunch.

Kate brings a unique perspective to those who seek more from yoga than a series of exercises. Students will be encouraged to move mindfully onto their bodies through postures, focus, meditation and breath work. The one hour class will be a dynamic vinyasa flow with a theme drawn from the theory of yoga. Kate is a firm but compassionate teacher and students will feel worked and fully stretched after the class. The session is for those who have a regular practice. Head massages are offered during shavasana.

Ozlem will teach a mezze of spicy and aromatic vegetable dishes from the Middle East.  This style of eating naturally lends itself to creating meals which showcase vegetables and Ozlem has put together a delicious set of dishes which celebrate this approach to eating.

Please wear suitable clothing – either activewear or loose clothing.

For the cookery class, all recipes, ingredients, equipment and aprons are provided.

Perfect for printing at home without a press, this hybrid printmaking and watercolour process is wonderfully calm and meditative.  Developed around 1915 by a group of artists who wanted to emulate Japanese woodblock paintings, this has emerged as a technique in its own right. Each colour is separated by a cut white line, which becomes an integral part of the design, and the block can be printed from many times, identically or in different colour combinations.

    12/11/2020
Micklems Farm, Knowl Hill Common, Knowl Hill, Berkshire RG10 9YD

    Pet Portraits with Personality

Together we will work through a stage by stage process to create a Pet Portrait in Oils- using an ‘islands to oceans’ method of working.  We are aiming to make the eyes come alive and give the animal and your painting lots of personality! I hope to inspire you with some new ideas and techniques to take away with you and apply to your own work.

You will be working from your own image, either from an I-pad OR you can use a photograph at least 5” x 5”.  The animal’s eyes must be clear and in focus. Crop your image so that it is square.  The head of the animal should take up most of the frame. For good (free to use) reference images see www.pixabay.com The better the reference image – the better the painting!

Items to bring: A photograph of your animal or an image on an ipad / tablet. A black and white print out of your square cropped image as large as you can make it on an A4 piece of paper. A sharp pencil and a 30cm ruler. A selection of synthetic brushes to include some ‘short flat’ synthetic acrylic brushes.  I like to use – Daler Rowney System 3: short flat ¼”, ½”, ¾”.  Daler Rowney System 3 filbert size 2. Small round size 1 synthetic brush. Palette knives – Winsor and newton size 22 or similar. ‘Liquin’ painting medium. A flat mixing palette – paper palettes are fine. (£2 in ‘The Works’). A clean plastic takeaway box with a lid. An empty cereal box to take your work home in.

Acrylic colours as follows – Titanium White, Cerulean Blue, plus: Naples yellow if you are painting a white animal, Cadmium Orange if you are painting a brown animal, Quinacridone Red if you are painting a black animal. A good size jar for low odour thinners/white spirit substitute for cleaning your brushes, some rags or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean.

Oil colours as follows – Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarine Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, French Utramarine, Phthalo Blue.

If you’re trying oils for the first time- oil paint and medium can be supplied for use on the day at additional cost of £6.

    Included on the day:

    –        8” x 8” gessoboard and any other materials not specified for students to bring

    –        Expert tuition

    –        1 to 1 guidance

    Wille and the bandits

    Bookings Now Being Taken

Essentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vein of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time, Wille and the Bandits try to take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up.

The use of more bizarre instrumentation and eclectic influences in the song writing often pushes them more into a world music or progressive category. Having toured with artists such as Deep Purple through to the John Butler trio and played major festivals across Europe, the band seem to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances.

They have received great critical acclaim, being voted in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and reaching number 2 in the UK blues chart with their first single on downloads alone. Now touring their third independently released studio album Wille and the Bandits fan base, repertoire of sounds,
styles and innovation seems to be growing at an exponential rate.

The band are praised in the press for their albums; bursting at the seams with textures, originality and soul. Rock legends such as Ian Paice, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi have also praised the band’s musicianship and their unique edge to Rock and Blues.

“Wille is a suberb slide player, I love what these guys are doing” – Joe Bonamassa

If Cream had spent more time on a beach in Newquay they might have sounded like this.” – Blues Matters Magazine

    Porcelain Festive Decorations

With the festive season fast approaching this workshop offers the opportunity to work with different porcelain clays, to make both hanging and free-standing decorations, eg tea lights.

Create pretty knitted effect decorations for you and your home without the use of knitting needles!

    Further Detail

Porcelain is a fascinating material – its whiteness, translucency and strength mark it apart from other clays.   Porcelain doesn’t behave like ordinary clays – it doesn’t have the same plasticity or stretch-ability, so has to be handled a little differently.  So we will make the hanging decorations from standard porcelain clay, and will switch to paper porcelain clay to make the 3D pieces.

I will provide a wide range of examples and demonstrate the ways to achieve results using templates, formers and textures.  I will show you how to enhance the decorations once they are fired using sharpie pens. Most of the decorations will be left unglazed and fired to 1300 degrees, especially the hanging decorations, although the 3D free-standing ones can be glazed with a transparent glaze.

    Skills/Techniques Covered
    • Pinching and coiling
    • Slab rolling
    • Use of templates and formers
    • Using texture as decoration
    • Finishing of edges
    • Joining sections of clay & blending/ securing seams
    • Piercing
    Level
This course is designed for a wide range of abilities including complete beginners

Materials are not included in your course fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £25-30 payable to the tutor during the course. Depending upon quantity of clay used

    Further Detail

Pen patterns exercises pave the way for skill with the broad-edged pen and provide simple ideas for border decorations before you embark on letters. They also introduce you to the notion of a constant pen angle.  The lower-case will be practiced in groups of letters with the same strokes, to reinforce the notion of a ‘matching set’ and to develop a writing flow. Letter and word spacing follow, then looking at the Capitals. If you’re experienced but rusty, you’ll fly through these and move on to arranging a quote on a page or trying out variations.
Everyone will aim to take home some labels, or signs, or a quote, to show how you can apply what you’ve learned, and to encourage you to pursue it  further at your leisure.

    NOW BOOKING FOR CHRISTMAS 2020!

In the depths of the Indian rainforest a child is abandoned with no possessions, no family and no home. Under the light of the full moon the baby is discovered by a pack of wolves, who decide to raise him as one of their own.

When the ferocious tiger Shere Khan comes looking for prey, the child – Mowgli – is swept to safety by a friendly bear and a wise black panther, who teach him the laws of the jungle. Years pass, the child grows up and the pack are put in danger when Shere Khan returns demanding the ‘mancub’ leave the jungle forever.

Mowgli faces a choice… should he stay and risk further destruction? Or should he leave and accept that the place he knows as home isn’t the right place for him after all?

A wild and captivating musical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale full of warmth, laughter and wonder. Join Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, Kaa, King Louie and more as the Watermill Theatre is transformed into the Indian Jungle for the adventure of a lifetime.

Suitable for age 4+. We regret that we are unable to admit children under 3 or babes in arms into the auditorium except for the Relaxed Performance on Saturday 19 December at 2.30pm. Please call the box office on 01635 46044 for more information and to book tickets.

We are delighted to announce that this autumn we will be presenting a limited season of socially distanced performances inside our auditorium.

It’s Christmas Eve, and whilst London is alive with festive cheer and seasonal goodwill, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge grows meaner by the minute. A heartless money lender, who cares more about counting his coins than for his fellow man, Scrooge despises Christmas and everything to do with it. But will a timely visit from the haunting ghosts of Christmas past, present and future change his wicked ways before it’s too late?

Two actor-musicians introduce us to Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and a host of extraordinary characters as you have never seen them before in a festive retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale.
