    Garden Panels in Stained Glass

Micklems Farm | West Berkshire Villages

Make a slim stained-glass panel which can be displayed in the garden. The panel is framed in zinc and steel. This type of frame is rigid enough to support the panel being placed into the garden border. During the day you will work on a project chosen from a selection of prepared designs. You will learn how to cut coloured glass using a design template. The glass pieces are then assembled with lead and a zinc framework. The panel will be soldered and cemented to finish and the final clean is done the next day at home. There will be demonstrations of each technique and individual guidance. The tutor will provide all the materials and equipment needed for the course. Material costs aren’t covered in the course fee, they will be payable to the tutor at the end of the day. Material costs for a garden panel are £35 per person.

    Event Status- Current

Following government announcements, we will be reopening on Monday 17th May. We have contacted all students who had booked onto rescheduled workshops, if you have booked and haven’t received the email then please check your junk. If you are booked to attend a workshop then you will be offered the opportunity to hold

your place until it’s rescheduled or a refund. If you hold your place and cannot attend the new date then you will be offered a refund or the opportunity to book onto another workshop. If you have booked using a gift card, you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until the new date is announced or a credit note.

Over the first lockdown, we spent time implementing various measures to make our studio as safe as possible for our students and tutors.

With just under 1000 sq ft of floor space, a new large demo area with a wall mounted monitor allows students to be socially distanced during tutor demonstrations

and our ten work stations are now set further apart with more open flow areas in the centre of the studio.

We have a central hands-free hand sanitising station which students and tutors use upon entry and throughout the day.

We use our very own fogging system using anti-viral disinfectant (tested against Coronavirus) after every workshop.

We are providing disposable cutlery at the tea and coffee station and paper hand towels for hand washing. We ask students to bring their own mugs and face masks.

As far as the weather allows, the large patio doors onto the garden will be kept open and we will have tables and chairs for eating lunch outside.

Students and tutors will be able to use our open plan kitchen/dining space and large conservatory to enjoy their lunch socially distanced and as the weather gets warmer we’ll have marquees erected in the grounds for students to use.

We hope that these measures will reassure you that we have done as much as we can to ensure your safety when attending workshops.

    07/07/2021-08/07/2021

Fun with Glass Fusing & Slumping

You will be able to extend your skills and techniques involved in Glass Fusing and Slumping. We will make four items over the two days and you will have the option of attending either one or both days. This course is project based and will give you the opportunity to experiment with a variety of fusing ideas and glass materials. Materials are not included in your course fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £35-£45 per day for two projects (depending on size). If you do both days it will be more. This is payable to the tutor during the course. This fee does include both firings and use of moulds.

Project 1: Op Art. Inspired by the art style of the 1960s you will learn how to create optical illusions in your glass. We will create an illusion of movement like swelling or warping within the glass. Different colour combinations and patterns can be considered to create a very unique piece of glass art.

Project 2: Colour Saturation: You will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass using the technique of colour saturation. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter. Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for this process. During this project you will also be able to develop your glass cutting skills.

Project 3: Glass Fused Mosaic. Design a picture by inlaying small pieces of glass and then grouting it with glass powders to create an intricate and colourful glass ‘painting’. Your glass mosaic will be fused together. You can either create a small wall hanging or a shallow slumped platter which will involve a second firing.

Project 4: Patchwork and Decals. This project will familiarise you with the use of Decal transfers in your glass art to include printed effect. We will work with a variety of sheet glass as well as printed designs to create intricate patch work patterns. This technique will include two firings, both Fusing and Slumping and you will have a choice of moulds to select from.

Projects might be subject to change depending on suitability, available material and new inspiration the tutor might have, but they will be exciting!

Did you know that walking can improve your cognitive skills? That strengthening your muscular core reduces anxiety? That light stretching can combat a whole host of mental and bodily ailments, from stress to inflammation? We all know that exercise changes the way you think and feel. But scientists are just starting to discover exactly how it works.

Interviewing researchers and practitioners around the world, she reveals how you can work your body to improve your mind. As lockdown throws us back on our own mental and physical resources, there is no better time to take control of how you think and feel.

“Our bodies are designed to be in motion, and our minds suffer when they aren’t. Move! is science writing at its absolute best: lucid, informative, authoritative, fascinating – and very very important” — Guy Claxton, author ― Intelligence In The Flesh

Caroline will be giving a talk in person, followed by the opportunity to ask questions and get a copy of the book Move! signed if you wish. This free event is a must for anyone who is interested in how movement affects our minds.

    • You will be fully capable of creating a Woodspeen classic starter, main course and dessert
    • Discuss what makes up great taste in a dish
    • Where possible we’ll be using produce from our own vegetable plots to start to create some of the classics
    • Enjoy your starter with your fellow cooks around The Chef’s Table for lunch, and your show-stopper dessert with some tea before you leave. The tutor will masterclass the main-course for you to re-create at home, and the main course you have made will be packed up for you to serve at home.

    Course includes:

    • Arrival at 9.45am for tea and coffee and course introduction
    • Enjoy lunch around our Chef’s Table
    • We will keep you refreshed with tea, coffee and mineral water throughout the day, and your show-stopper dessert can be enjoyed with tea in the afternoon
    • Finish course at 3pm with the main course made on the day to take home

To take away: Main course made on the day and all notes and recipes.

Spaces for this course are subject to minimum number of participants.

    Wille and the Bandits

Essentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vein of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time, Wille and the Bandits try to take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up.

The use of more bizarre instrumentation and eclectic influences in the song writing often pushes them more into a world music or progressive category. Having toured with artists such as Deep Purple through to the John Butler trio and played major festivals across Europe, the band seem to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances.

They have received great critical acclaim, being voted in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and reaching number 2 in the UK blues chart with their first single on downloads alone. Now touring their third independently released studio album Wille and the Bandits fan base, repertoire of sounds,
styles and innovation seems to be growing at an exponential rate.

The band are praised in the press for their albums; bursting at the seams with textures, originality and soul. Rock legends such as Ian Paice, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi have also praised the band’s musicianship and their unique edge to Rock and Blues.

“Wille is a suberb slide player, I love what these guys are doing” – Joe Bonamassa

If Cream had spent more time on a beach in Newquay they might have sounded like this.” – Blues Matters Magazine

    Booking tickets:
Tickets must be booked in advance and we are asking customers to select an e-ticket if possible.
This means that your ticket can be scanned on arrival, reducing the need for contact with our staff when they check tickets. If you are unable to book an e-ticket, please speak to our Box Office team.

Bookings must be for no more than 6 individuals (or two households). Online bookings are limited to a maximum of 6 tickets. If you are making a booking for two households and require more than 6 tickets please contact the Box Office and they will assist with your booking.

Anyone in your party aged 16 or over will be asked to scan the Test and Trace QR code or to record their contact details with us.

    Social distancing:
We have limited the number of people admitted to each event. Last autumn we rebuilt our auditorium seating in order to maximise capacity whilst adhering to social distancing measures. This seating layout has more space between rows, the seats have individual arm rests, and each booking is separated using dividing Perspex screens. We have put our summer season on sale using this layout in order to ensure the events can take place under all circumstances. Should the government regulations change and social distancing is no longer a requirement we will contact all customers to discuss their booking with them and to inform them of any updated procedures.

    Masks:
Please remember to bring your face covering with you as visitors over the age of 11 are required to wear them in the building, unless you are exempt from wearing one, or if you are eating or drinking.

    Social distancing:
Please ensure you leave a safe distance between yourself and other customers, staff members or volunteers when joining queues or moving around the building.

    Hand sanitiser:
Please use hand sanitiser on arrival and then regularly re-apply or wash your hands during your visit.

    Masks:
Visitors must wear a face mask while inside the building, including while watching a film.

    Tickets:
Tickets must be booked in advance and we ask customers to select an e-ticket if possible.
This ticket will be scanned at a contactless scanning point on entry. You do not need to show a ticket for activities in the Learning Centre or The Base as they will have a list of those who have booked.

    Making payments:
We will be asking customers to make contactless card payments where possible. Card machines will be wiped down after use if they have been used for chip and PIN.

    Cleaning:
We have increased and enhanced cleaning regimes in place. Common touch points will be cleaned regularly throughout the day.

    Using the lift:
If you need to use the lift, please only travel in it with members of your own household or social bubble.

    Using the toilet facilities:
Please wash your hands before and after you use the facilities. Please keep your distance and allow others sufficient space to pass, especially when entering or leaving.

    Leaving the building:
Please follow instructions from our team who will guide you on which exit to use.

    If you feel unwell:
If you feel unwell whilst visiting, please leave the building and return to your home. If you are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms, please contact 119 to arrange a test.

We’re excited to welcome young people and families to Victoria Park this summer for a class, course or workshop, as part of the Out of Doors Festival. You can find some important information below about what to expect from your visit.

    Arrival
When you arrive at the park for your class, please look out for the Corn Exchange trike and banner. An area for the class will be designated with bunting. We ask that during the class, participants remain within this designated area. We cannot be held responsible for anything that happens outside of our designated class area.

You do not need to show a physical ticket when you arrive at your class but the practitioner leading the class will be doing a register so you will need to know the surname you booked under.

    Weather
Since these are outdoor classes we ask that you dress for all weathers and provide your own sun-hats, sun cream, coats, jackets, scarves and umbrellas (it is an English summer after all!).

If it is raining heavily on the day of your class, we will follow our Wet Weather plan. We may cancel class and will contact you to let you know either the evening before for a morning class, or during that morning if you have an afternoon class. Please make sure your contact details are up to date when you book. In the event that we have to cancel your class due to adverse weather, we will offer you a full refund.

    Toilets
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide toilets for this event.

There are public toilets in Parkway shopping centre that you can use before your event starts, but please be aware that we are unable to let children and young people leave our sessions unattended.

If you are bringing your child to a drop-off class and you think your child may need the bathroom during their class, please stay close by so you can take them yourself.

    First Aid
Should you or your child require first aid during your class, please visit the Corn Exchange trike or speak to your practitioner. A Corn Exchange First Aider will be on hand either in the park or on call in the main Corn Exchange building.

    Other things to bring:
    Please bring a water bottle.

Our classes will be taking place on grass so please bring a picnic blanket/something waterproof to sit on.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide chairs. If you or a member of your household attending the class has mobility issues, we suggest you bring your own camping chair to sit on.

We hope you enjoy our Out of Doors Festival!

As far as the weather allows, the large patio doors onto the garden will be kept open and we will have tables and chairs for eating lunch outside.

The course will start with a series of colour mixing exercises. It has been said that acrylic colour is very crude, this is simply not true as this course will reveal. We will start by colour mixing from the three primary colours and then graduate to more complex mixes. Select your favorite mixes and paint some small pieces of paper and make a collage using the work of Ben Nicholson as your inspiration. After this we will make an abstract painting utilising some of the colour mixes you have created. The painting will be based around the geometric work of Nicholson.

Please remember to bring your face covering with you as visitors over the age of 11 are required to wear them in the building, unless you are exempt from wearing one, or if you are eating or drinking.

The Barn North Sydmonton House, North Sydmonton, Newbury, Hampshire RG20 4UL

    Watercolour Painting for Beginners

A great day for beginners or those wanting to reacquaint themselves with watercolour painting on location. This course will be tutored by Isabel, a watercolourist, with over ten years’ experience in leading courses. She has structured the course to spend some time sited in our beautiful barn and the rest of the day in the grounds of the estate.

The morning will be spent familiarising yourself with watercolour painting indoors, exploring painting in layers, mixing colours and mark-making, as well as exploring the format of paintings.  You will work from loose reference material (photos and drawings) that Isabel will have prepared.

In the afternoon you will choose your own view outdoors (there are covered areas and trees to provide shade should it be needed); you will be taught how quick sketches help to understand light and shade, and finally paint your chosen view in full colour.

Isabel teaches through direct demonstration of techniques, and by providing exercises and examples which allow you to gain confidence whilst putting paint to paper.

The course is restricted to 6 attendees to allow for plenty of one to one contact with the tutor and time to ask questions. This promises to be a relaxing, fun and instructive course.

Isabel is keen to stress that quality materials are essential to the learning experience when it comes to watercolour painting. Hence we are providing a pack for you to use and keep worth £50, all included in the price of the course. This will consist of a set of high pigment, extra fine watercolours perfect for painting plein air, 10 sheets of 300gm watercolour paper in various finishes and a set of Rosemary & Co brushes.

The course will be fuelled by the kitchens of Honesty Bakers and Makers, who will provide lunch and refreshments through the day.

Micklems Farm | West Berkshire Villages

Join Debbie for this workshop to make 2-3 ceramic boxes inspired by Japanese potters. Debbie will show you 2 ways to make a box with a lid, both using slabs of clay; the first method is to wrap a soft slab of clay around a former and the second method is to cut sections using templates and join the sections together. We will also include texture as part of the decoration of the pieces.

The day will start with a brief look at some examples of boxes – both historical and contemporary, images and real examples.  Then you can decide on the shape you would like to make and after a demonstration on how to roll out a slab and join slabs together, you’ll be off and raring to go.  Debbie will also show you how to use a template, how to add texture and how to make sure the lid fits! During the afternoon, you will be able to choose which colour glaze you would like for your work.

The pots will be left with the tutor for firing and glazing and will be available for collection from Micklem’s Farm approx 4-5 weeks following the course. The cost of the clay, glazes and firings is not included in the course fee;  the approximate  cost for these will be £30, payable to the tutor during the workshop.

Smashed2 reverses its male and female roles for the very first time.

Inspired by the work of the great choreographer Pina Bausch, Gandini Juggling combine elements of her gestural choreography with intricate patterns and cascades of solo and ensemble juggling.

The result is a new hybrid of juggling, in a dance theatre style, performed with meticulous unison and split-second timing.

    On Track

This event will take place at Horris Hill School, Newbury

[The bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel” Susan B Anthony, Women’s Rights Activist, 1896.

When lockdown begins Kit’s world shrinks. Staying at home to save lives has meant a retreat back to the role of mother, home-maker, with teacher thrown in too. With the walls closing in, her garage and 2 wheels become her sanctuary…

On Track is a new site-specific play drawing on true stories and using RedCape’s trademark blend of comedy and visual, physical theatre. The audience follow Kit’s journey of discovery through the shocking history of women’s cycling. Riding at night, disguised as men, these cycling pioneers powered over Victorian ideals of the genteel, house-bound woman and opened up new worlds.

Performed outdoors at Horris Hill, On Track explores the effects of Covid on our mental health and tells the story of how a simple bicycle has become a vehicle to freedom once again.

Audience members are encouraged to cycle to the show!

Watson will perform an array of classics, from much loved standards such as Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Swing Low, through to affirming and uplifting showstoppers including You Raise Me Up and Bring Him Home, alongside a very special Phantom Of The Opera medley.

£1 from every ticket sold for the events will be donated towards the NHS Charities Together, the collective representing, supporting and championing the work of the NHS’ official charities.

Russell Watson is one of the world’s most popular classical singers, once described by the New York Times as a performer ‘who sings like Pavarotti and entertains the audience like Frank Sinatra’.

His debut album The Voice saw him hold the top spot in the charts for an unprecedented 52 weeks – whilst at the same time topping the charts in the USA, making him the first British male artiste to attain a simultaneous transatlantic number one. The Voice subsequently became the first and only album by a UK classical artiste to achieve 1,000,000 sales.

Russell’s incredible career has seen him perform for some of the world’s leading figures – from Presidents to Popes, and Emperors to Queens, including HM The Queen, the late Pope John Paul II, former US Presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama; and the Emperor of Japan.

With his collaborative albums with Aled Jones, as well as last year’s compilation album ‘20’, Russell continues to achieve remarkable successes in the charts, as well as selling out venues all over the UK and indeed the world.

Very special guests for the summer show will be The NHS Choir. The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Voices Choir were first seen on Gareth Malone’s BBC2 show, Sing While You Work, where they were narrowly beaten in the final. Since then they have gone from strength-to-strength.

The choir rode an overwhelming wave of support from the public and the media as they landed the much coveted Christmas No.1. spot in the official UK chart in 2015 with their single A Bridge Over You, alongside kind words from Justin Bieber who they beat in the chart race.

Following this success, the choir recorded their debut album Something Inside So Strong, as well as performing at prestigious events and venues including the FA Cup Final, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

Last year the choir recorded a new version of Justin Bieber’s song Holy with Bieber himself, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and performed alongside Michael Ball and Captain Sir Tom Moore for a recording of You’ll Never Walk Alone, with profits going towards the NHS Charities Together

A Flavour To Savour | Arlington Arts

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do.  In 2003 our family routine was turned upside down when my eldest daughter, 10 years old at the time, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes – a condition where the pancreas effectively stops producing the insulin hormone which constantly controls the blood sugar level in the body.

Overnight, my daughter had to start thinking carefully about her sugar intake and exercise regimes as well as coming to terms with having to inject insulin every day for the rest of her life.

In order to compensate somehow for this immense upheaval in her lifestyle, along with limited understanding of the condition from her friends, I developed the characters appearing in A Flavour to Savour.

The main character Billy Sweet, and the Sugar Cube gang represent the confectionery industry who use every trick in the book to woo and seduce us all into all things ‘sweet’ with their fancy packaging and high sugar content.

His rivals became the staple healthy options, such as tinned tuna, sweetcorn, tomatoes and pulses (beans) and a story evolved when Giovanni, a local restauranteur is fed up with the rival gangs fighting on the street outside his restaurant and suggests their time would be better spent entering his competition to create a flavour to savour!

Billy Sweet senses the competition might not go his way and concocts a devious plan to secure the prize money at the expense of Guest Judge Dame Lollo Rosso, who ends up in a terrible state and Billy’s hapless sidekick, Cookie who gets ‘dunked’ for his troubles.

I was keen for people living with Type 1 Diabetes to be able to participate in the show and having reached out on social media, I am delighted to have succeeded in achieving representation in the cast and the band.

The company will be coming together in the days leading up to the performance and rehearsing‘boot camp style’ at the venue.

Special thanks go to Nick Brace at Actiontrack Performance Co. for musical direction and the many family, friends and colleagues for their input in bringing these characters to life in support of DiabetesUK.

The performance is to be filmed on the night and footage will used as ongoing promotion in support of DiabetesUK.

A retiring collection will also be taken at the end of the performance.

Each year around 10,000 concert-goers gather in the stunning grounds in front of Highclere Castle for an exceptional evening of sublime classical music. The programme includes carefully choreographed and thrilling Spitfire and cavalry displays, dramatic cannon fire and a stunning firework finale.

Approaching its 20th year at Highclere, the series itself is celebrating 20 years since the first Battle Proms was staged, and there’s a reason it continues to be a firmly established favourite in the local calendar. The organisers are now encouraging people to book early and ensure they don’t miss out on the best possible ticket prices for this fabulous summer event. So pack up the hampers and champers and gather the troops for this ‘Party in the Park’ with a difference!

The full 2 hour orchestral concert from the New English Concert Orchestra, led by Douglas Coombes MBE and compered by much-loved BBC presenter Pam Rhodes, will include a host of well-known classical pieces and conclude with a ‘last night of the proms’ sing-along with favourites such as Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and more.
The musical programme will be augmented by a toe-tapping warm-up act, thrilling Napoleonic cavalry displays, a meticulously choreographed aerial display from a WWII Spitfire, live firing cannons and, of course, spectacular fireworks. The Battle Proms is still believed to be the only opportunity in the world to see their signature piece – Beethoven’s Battle Symphony – performed as he composed it: with 193 live Napoleonic cannon providing a thunderous percussion!
