    Pet Portraits with Personality

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

Together we will work through a stage by stage process to create a Pet Portrait in Oils- using an ‘islands to oceans’ method of working.  We are aiming to make the eyes come alive and give the animal and your painting lots of personality! I hope to inspire you with some new ideas and techniques to take away with you and apply to your own work.

You will be working from your own image, either from an I-pad OR you can use a photograph at least 5” x 5”.  The animal’s eyes must be clear and in focus. Crop your image so that it is square.  The head of the animal should take up most of the frame. For good (free to use) reference images see www.pixabay.com The better the reference image – the better the painting!

Following government announcements, we will be reopening on Monday 17th May. We have contacted all students who had booked onto rescheduled workshops, if you have booked and haven’t received the email then please check your junk. If you are booked to attend a workshop then you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until it’s rescheduled or a refund. If you hold your place and cannot attend the new date then you will be offered a refund or the opportunity to book onto another workshop. If you have booked using a gift card, you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until the new date is announced or a credit note.

Over the first lockdown, we spent time implementing various measures to make our studio as safe as possible for our students and tutors.

With just under 1000 sq ft of floor space, a new large demo area with a wall mounted monitor allows students to be socially distanced during tutor demonstrations and our ten work stations are now set further apart with more open flow areas in the centre of the studio.

We have a central hands-free hand sanitising station which students and tutors use upon entry and throughout the day.

We use our very own fogging system using anti-viral disinfectant (tested against Coronavirus) after every workshop.

We are providing disposable cutlery at the tea and coffee station and paper hand towels for hand washing. We ask students to bring their own mugs and face masks.

As far as the weather allows, the large patio doors onto the garden will be kept open and we will have tables and chairs for eating lunch outside.

Students and tutors will be able to use our open plan kitchen/dining space and large conservatory to enjoy their lunch socially distanced and as the weather gets warmer we’ll have marquees erected in the grounds for students to use.

We hope that these measures will reassure you that we have done as much as we can to ensure your safety when attending workshops.

    Beautiful Breads

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | Things to Do | What’s On

Romilla Arber has been baking bread for many years and is passionate about real bread, made traditionally. She firmly believes that good-quality bread doesn’t make you fat! Industrialised, mass produced bread is the perfect example of how our food culture has broken down. It is made with only profit in mind not what is best for the health of the customer.

On this course you will make a variety of breads (there will be plenty to take home) and enjoy a simple lunch with a glass of wine. You too can fall in love with the art of bread making and learn how to make exquisite artisan loaves in your own kitchen.

Romilla is the author or two cookery books and she has won the prestigious Gourmand Best UK Cookbook award for her second book. She is a passionate advocate of eating a balanced diet and in 2008 founded the Food Education Trust with the aim of working with schools to promote the benefits of home-cooked food.

Romilla is the founder and owner of The Honesty Group which includes the Crown and Garter at Inkpen and the Hartley Arms at Donnington.

    Abigail’s Party

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

Aspirational Beverly and her put upon husband Laurence are hosting a drinks party for new neighbours, Angela and Tony, together with mild-mannered divorcee, Sue, who’s daughter, Abigail, is having her fifteenth birthday party a few doors away. As the gin and tonics flow our hostess becomes loud and brash, small talk turns to outrageous flirting, marital discord escalates and the thin veneer of middle-class respectability begins to peel away.

This iconic suburban comedy is as relevant and grotesquely funny today as it has always been. Full of wicked one-liners and 70s nostalgia and as familiar as a cheese and pineapple hedgehog, Abigail’s Party is an absolute joy and a firm favorite with audiences of all ages

    Christmas Tealights and Lanterns

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

Enjoy making Christmas lantern and tealight holders to style your home this festive season. Porcelain is beguiling – it’s whiteness and translucency attract the eye and it has a fascinating history involving industrial espionage and cutting edge science. It helped to change the drinking habits of entire cultures and to shape an empire.

Tricky to work with, however with the right tools, the right guidance and the right project, the effort is most definitely worth it.  The translucency of porcelain works so well with light sources – so tealight holders and lanterns are ideal. Debbie will show you how to roll out slabs of clay, apply texture by impressing, carving and piercing the porcelain and to how to use formers to create the lanterns and tealight holders.  We can also sneak in a hanging tree decoration or 2 as well!

There will be demonstrations of each texture and individual guidance throughout.  The tutor will provide all the materials and equipment you will need.

Debbie will fire and return your pieces in time for Christmas.

The materials are not included in the ticket price:  the material and firing charge is £35 and is payable to the tutor on the day.  You can pay by cash, card or bank transfer.

    ONLINE Festive Patchwork Star

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

This lovely festive patchwork star is the perfect introduction to the craft of template patchwork, also known as English paper piecing. An adaptable technique which, once mastered, you could easily translate into something larger – perhaps a cushion cover for example. A lovely activity as the cold, dark evenings draw in.

Template or English Paper Piecing can be traced back to the late 1700’s and became popular in the early 1800’s. It is a very therapeutic sewing technique, requiring no expensive kit – just paper templates, a small amount of fabric (off-cuts and scraps are perfect) scissors and thread.

Students will learn how to cut out their templates accurately which is key to the process, otherwise the star won’t fit together. Christine will show a few different ways of finishing the star off using ribbons, button, embroidery thread and beads to add that special detail. These stars make lovely gifts and look beautiful hanging from a Christmas tree.

    Passing

Adapted from the celebrated 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen, Passing tells the story of two Black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga), who can ‘pass’ as white but choose to live on opposite sides of the color line during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York.

After a chance encounter reunites the former childhood friends one summer afternoon, Irene reluctantly allows Clare into her home, where she ingratiates herself to Irene’s husband (André Holland) and family, and soon her larger social circle as well.

As their lives become more deeply intertwined, Irene finds her once-steady existence upended by Clare, and Passing becomes a riveting examination of obsession, repression and the lies people tell themselves and others to protect their carefully constructed realities.

    ONSITE Porcelain Festive Decorations

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

With the festive season fast approaching this workshop offers the opportunity to work with different porcelain clays, to make both hanging and free-standing decorations, eg tea lights.

Porcelain is a fascinating material – its whiteness, translucency and strength mark it apart from other clays. Porcelain doesn’t behave like ordinary clays – it doesn’t have the same plasticity or stretch-ability, so has to be handled a little differently.  So we will make the hanging decorations from standard porcelain clay, and will switch to paper porcelain clay to make the 3D pieces.

I will provide a wide range of examples and demonstrate the ways to achieve results using templates, formers and textures.  I will show you how to enhance the decorations once they are fired using sharpie pens. Most of the decorations will be left unglazed and fired to 1300 degrees, especially the hanging decorations, although the 3D free-standing ones can be glazed with a transparent glaze.

Ian Siegal (Solo) | Arlington Arts

West Berkshire Villagers | Things to Do | What’s On | Events. Siegal is known as a bluesman, but it’s just one shade in the palette of an artist who slips between continents, eras and expectations. They say you can’t sing the blues until you’ve lived the life, and when Ian Siegal steps up to the mic, you can hear the slings and arrows. His forte is playing to an audience. He takes command of the stage in a way very few artists alive today can match. Sweat, passion, humour, incendiary slide guitar and a soul-infused voice big enough to fell trees!

Each year his influence spreads further and recently to Brazil; but what sticks most in Ian’s mind is his guest appearance at London’s Jazz Café with 92-year-old Pinetop Perkins and other remaining members of Muddy Waters’ band. Then later at a festival in Norway, in a role reversal and totally unexpected, these legends of post-war Blues spontaneously joined Ian on stage for what turned into a memorable hour-long set.

Following the government’s update today on social gatherings, we know many of you will have questions about what this will mean for your visit to the Corn Exchange, Learning Centre or The Base.

As an arts venue we are permitted to host our films, live performances, workshops, classes and exhibitions as planned. The team here, and all of the practitioners and performers that we work with, have meticulously planned these to ensure we are Covid-secure. We are complying with all industry and government guidelines and are proud to have the Visit England We’re Good to Go certificate displayed.

    Book with confidence:
We want you to feel confident about booking in advance for a film, screening, performance, exhibition, course or workshop. It is very important that people displaying symptoms of Covid-19 do not come to events so, if you are unwell with coronavirus symptoms or having to self-isolate, please phone the Box Office and we will arrange for your tickets to be transferred, credited to your account or refunded.

    Booking tickets:
Tickets must be booked in advance and we are asking customers to select an e-ticket if possible. This means that your ticket can be scanned on arrival reducing the need for contact with our staff when they check tickets. If you are unable to book an e-ticket, please speak to our Box Office team.

You do not need to show a ticket for events in the Learning Centre or at The Base as the team there will have a record of all those who have booked.

You must only book tickets for people in your household or support bubble. You will be asked to confirm this when you make your booking. If you wish to come with someone who is not in your household or support bubble, they will need to book tickets in a separate transaction.

In accordance with Government regulations sectors including leisure, entertainment and hospitality and therefore the Corn Exchange, Newbury are now legally obliged to have a system in place to request and record contact details of their customers, visitors and staff to help break the chains of transmission of coronavirus. Therefore your booking details will now be used for Test and Trace purposes.

    Social distancing:
We have limited the number of people admitted to each event and seats will be left free between different household groups to ensure appropriate social distancing.

For films and performances up to and including Sunday 25 October, we have implemented a ‘social bubble’ system of booking online. As in the example picture below, you will see that there are seats available in bubbles of different group sizes and you will need to select the one that is appropriate for your booking. Seats that are available are shown in red and those that have already been booked, or that have been left free for social distancing, are shown in grey.

You must select a bubble which fits with your group size otherwise the system will not proceed with the booking. For example, if you try to book two seats in a bubble which is designed for four, the booking will not go through and you will need to select a bubble of two seats. If you require a bubble size which is not available, please contact the Box Office and they will assist with your booking.

The system will continue to be used in the cinema after 25 October.

A fun, creative workshop in which you can add to your gilding skills by working on a selection of small projects involving gold leaf, shell gold and coloured silver leaf.

We’ll start off by looking at the best method of laying manuscript gesso in complex shapes, with tips as to how to achieve the perfect profile and mirror shine. There will then be a choice of three small projects to work on: combining flat and raised gilding, combining different colours of gold and /or silver leaf (with the option to add tooling) and a final project using shell gold and watercolour paint.

We will look at designs you can create, either earrings or a pendant, then show you how to make a moulding compound which will be used to cast your chosen object or texture. Skerryvore

Following the recent government instructions over the weekend, Arlington Arts will be closed to the public from Thursday 5th November until further notice. We will be contacting all customers with tickets to shows during November over the next few days. Thank you to all of our customers and wider community for the continued support – we could not do it without you!

We were overwhelmed by the response we received on our Crowdfunder campaign in the first lockdown, which hit 84% of the target totalling £6641! The lovely comments posted by supporters really helped us keep our spirits up. Arlington Arts is so lucky to have such a great community of people, who join us throughout the year to enjoy all of the live events – we cannot wait to welcome you all back!

We are contacting all ticket holders in date order, regarding rescheduled/cancelled performances.

Bring any collection of 8 of the most competent musicians in their genre on stage and the result is going to be amazing. Over the last 15 years, Skerryvore have brought their performances to audiences across the globe, from their early days in Scottish West Coast halls and bars, to Festival crowds in USA, Canada, Australia and throughout the UK and Europe. Picking up Scottish traditional music’s ‘Live Act of the Year’ twice on the way – in 2011 and again in 2016 – the band’s wide range of influences and talent produce a musically expansive, high energy set that excites and captivates audiences.

With a mix of fiddle, accordions, pipes and whistles, alongside guitar and vocals, underpinned by driving bass, drums and keys, Skerryvore represent the best in contemporary Scottish traditional music.  Their 6 studio albums demonstrate the wide range of influences the individual musicians bring to the mix – a unique fusion of folk, trad, rock and Americana, with even some jazz in there!

Comfortable in the studio though the band are, it’s on the road in front of a live audience that they really come into their own. Their live album, recorded at Scottish venues in late 2019 and due for release in 2020, will highlight this, as well as giving a hint that there’s much more to come for Skerryvore’s growing worldwide fanbase.

“A great bunch of guys and superb live – really infectious and it’s hard not to get swept up in what they do”Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2, 29.01.20
