    Another Round

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

Director Thomas Vinterberg and actor Mads Mikkelsen reunite for Another Round, a sobering comedy about ageing, alcoholism, and friendship between men.

There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday.

If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students? Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project turns into a genuine academic study. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences.

A dying wish from their best friend, Anna (Andrea Corr), compels Cassie (Kelly Preston), Kate (Jenny Seagrove), and Liz (Sally Phillips), to put old feuds aside and take her 17-year-old daughter on an interrailing journey across Europe that they did not quite finish during their studies. Following government announcements, we will be reopening on Monday 17th May. We have contacted all students who had booked onto rescheduled workshops, if you have booked and haven’t received the email then please check your junk. If you have booked using a gift card, you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until the new date is announced or a credit note.

Over the first lockdown, we spent time implementing various measures to make our studio as safe as possible for our students and tutors.

With just under 1000 sq ft of floor space, a new large demo area with a wall mounted monitor allows students to be socially distanced during tutor demonstrations and our ten work stations are now set further apart with more open flow areas in the centre of the studio.

We have a central hands-free hand sanitising station which students and tutors use upon entry and throughout the day.

We use our very own fogging system using anti-viral disinfectant (tested against Coronavirus) after every workshop.

We are providing disposable cutlery at the tea and coffee station and paper hand towels for hand washing. We ask students to bring their own mugs and face masks.

As far as the weather allows, the large patio doors onto the garden will be kept open and we will have tables and chairs for eating lunch outside.

Students and tutors will be able to use our open plan kitchen/dining space and large conservatory to enjoy their lunch socially distanced and as the weather gets warmer we’ll have marquees erected in the grounds for students to use.

We hope that these measures will reassure you that we have done as much as we can to ensure your safety when attending workshops.

Sir David Suchet opens UK Tour at The Watermill

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

Sir David Suchet makes his eagerly awaited return to UK stages in POIROT AND MORE, A RETROSPECTIVE this autumn. Following a successful tour of Australia and New Zealand in early 2020, the show will make its UK debut at The Watermill Theatre on 5 October. Sir David Suchet performed at The Watermill early in his career and is a long-standing supporter and patron of the theatre. David will retrace his steps as a young actor, visiting more than 20 theatres across the UK before a final performance at the Stockton Globe on 19 December.

POIROT AND MORE, A RETROSPECTIVE looks back fondly at David’s illustrious career, sharing some of his most beloved performances in a new and intimate light. Geoffrey Wansell, journalist, broadcaster, biographer and co-author of Poirot and Me, will be joining David as interviewer in this unmistakably unique event. Join us in conversation with the actor behind the detective and the many characters David has portrayed on stage and screen over a career spanning five decades.

    David Suchet said:

‘Regional theatre has always been very close to my heart as it’s where my career started and was nurtured. To visit so many places that have meant so much to me during my 52 year career is wonderful. This show is my way of connecting and saying hello to people across the country after this terrible period and welcoming them back into the theatre. I am looking forward to sharing my memories, stories and favourite moments.’

For over 25 years David has captivated millions worldwide as Agatha Christie’s elegant Belgian detective. Beyond Poirot, David has graced the world’s stages bringing literary greats to life, including Shakespeare, Wilde, Albee and Miller, and is celebrated for his portrayals of iconic roles such as Lady Bracknell, Cardinal Benelli, Joe Keller and Gregory Solomon. David spent 13 years in the Royal Shakespeare Company and remains an Associate Artist. He is an Emmy award winner, a seven-time Olivier Award Nominee (The Merchant of Venice, Separation, Oleanna, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Amadeus, All My Sons and The Price) and in 2020 was knighted for services to drama and charity.

Audiences are invited to spend an evening with one of the world’s most celebrated actors of our time and discover why he is renowned for not only inhabiting the role of Poirot, but also taking on the personalities of many of television, film and theatre’s most fascinating characters.

POIROT AND MORE, A RETROSPECTIVE is co-created by David Suchet and Liza McLean. The show was originally produced in Australia and New Zealand by Liza McLean and Andrew Kay and is presented in the UK by Liza McLean, Andrew Kay and Jonathan Church Theatre Productions.

A ‘Traditional’ skill approach to oil painting but in a contemporary manner. Learning all the basics of oil painting – most especially ‘The Blend’. You can’t call yourself an oil painter until you understand the blend!

We are also going to attempt the ‘old fashioned’ 7 layer oil painting method = with a modern approach to it. Using modern mediums.

JMW Turner is probably one of the best examples of a fine art oil painter = so we will also take inspiration from this Master.

    Fascinating Flourishes

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for students of all levels. No previous drawing experience is needed.

Offhand Flourishing is an ornate, non-lettering calligraphic art form based on 19th Century pen techniques. Using a pointed steel pen, these lovely designs are created with very little preplanning and are a direct result of thinking on paper. The process is peaceful, meditative, and surprisingly easy to learn. The designs are unique to everyone and the results are very rewarding.

Beginning with ornamental cartouche flourish and expanding into foliate designs, we will unleash the magic of these graceful forms. Colour and embellishment will be explored during the class with an emphasis on Autumn themes. These captivating designs can augment your calligraphic work, serve as borders, corners, cards or frameable art. You will be amazed at
how quickly your skills can progress as you watch these intricate designs come to life. The process will dramatically help to refine your skills with the pointed pen.

Schorr’s “overnight” success comes after years trudging the rugged road of life of the hard-working singer/songwriter, performer. Sari has a voice like no other; hyper-powerful, husky and muscular, with an incredible texture and range. Bottle the power of Grace Slick with the whisky-doused warmth of Janis Joplin and the vintage vocal result is Sari Schorr who pours out her heart and soul.

An epic musical about the pitfalls of love, fame and fortune starring Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose).

‘So may we start?’ Visionary filmmaker Leos Carax (Holy Motors) makes a triumphant return with Annette, an epic musical that sees him teaming up with Sparks, one of pop’s best-loved and most influential cult bands, to tell an audacious story.

A provocative stand-up comedian and internationally renowned opera singer live in contemporary Los Angeles. This seemingly perfect couple is constantly in the good graces of the media spotlight. However, when they welcome their daughter Annette into the world, her mysterious and ethereal gifts will change their lives forever.

Calling all gardeners, allotment holders and anyone who has an abundance of apples. Bring your crop along to our apple press to be turned into delicious and nutritious apple juice.

Growing Newbury Green was formed in 2012 after founder member Jeremy Gorbold suggested growing fruit trees on open spaces and parks in Newbury. With the agreement of Newbury Town Council we planted our first orchard at Barn Crescent that year and kept going from there! We now have over 60 apple trees in several sites around the town and awaiting our first major harvest any year now.

Alongside that we branched (sorry) out to filling shopping trolleys with herbs and lettuces and displaying them around town to publicise the Newbury In Bloom competition and in 2018 had a larger raised bed sited on Lock Island by the canal to try out a more substantial planting of crops .

    Summer of Soul

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

A transporting documentary that’s part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful documentary – created around an event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion.

Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten–until now.

Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being. The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more.

Carmen will always be free… she is a gypsy, a Romany, a traveler, an untamed spirit, captivating and elusive, yet earthy and fiercely alive.

Jose Agudo draws upon his unique palette of Flamenco and contemporary dance to create this dramatic adaptation of Prosper Merimée’s classic novella. The company delivers a rich tapestry of human motives and emotions, unravelling the complex exchange between conformity and freedom; the tension unleashed by obsessive human behaviour, the desire for self-disclosure, and upholding the right to be free.

Set to an original Flamenco infused score by Bernhard Schimpelsberger and an additional track by Kefaya, Carmen is a story about individuality, freedom, love and pleasure, and the belief that our journey of twists and turns we call life is always valuable.

Hockney and Hollywood | The Base Greenham

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | Things to Do | What’s On. The picture called Nude, 17th June 1984 was commissioned by his friend the Hollywood film director Nicolas Roeg to create an extraordinary life sized nude photographic study of Theresa Russell for the movie Insignificance, which starred his then wife, Theresa Russell, as Marilyn Monroe. It took Hockney four attempts with a Pentax camera to capture the images he wanted to create the stunning image. The collage shows both Theresa’s front and back as Hockney explores the use of lines and edges in his photography. The actress’s pose, together with the pink satin sheets, her blonde wig and licking of her lips is reminiscent of a centrefold pin up.

Nicolas Roeg, best known for directing Don’t Look Now, The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Witches, documented Hockney at work on the piece, photographing the artist as he prepared the scene, the assistants as they applied make up and Hockney taking the posed shots. These photographs give a unique and intimate never before seen ‘behind the scenes’ look at Hockney that make up an integral part of the exhibition, as one artist observes another.

    Nerina | Arlington Arts

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do.  Brit and Ivor Novello nominated singer-songwriter Pallot has always remained very much her own woman.

Now six albums and numerous EPs into her career, she has announced a UK tour to celebrate the release of her seventh album, and to do what she does best – wow audiences with her flawless voice, musicianship and critically acclaimed song-craft.

But who even is Nerina Pallot? Why should you even care? Is this not the fifty hundredth press release you have seen today about something in which you have no personal investment but are obliged to do something with in order to satisfy the rapacious hunger of the people for content, content and more content?

Absolutely. Life is busy. Life is hell. Hell is other people. Other people at gigs, especially that ten foot tall knob who insists on standing in front of you and only you. You have better things to do. Hopefully those things involve videos of cats or booking a holiday to Lisbon. Everybody’s going to Lisbon these days and posting photos of pastel coloured townhouses and pastries on Insta like you’ve never seen a house or a tart before and you are well within your rights to feel like you’re missing out.

Anyway, Nerina Pallot last had a hit in 2006 but amazingly she has managed to carve out a career as a cult artist with a loyal fanbase and has made six albums and countless EPs that get brilliant reviews but no radio and definitely no telly. She is about to release another album you’ve never heard of but enough people will want to exit their cosy homes around the country to see her live and need you to let them know about it, because she’s very good at the singing thing and is on occasion quite funny also.

    About this Event

There’s a vampire living at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre… but don’t worry – he won’t bite! Follow the trail and learn about some of his ‘batty’ friends who live on the nature reserve.

Stretch your legs this half term and explore our beautiful nature reserve at one of the most picturesque times of year. This trail takes you on a circular route where you will become a bat expert and learn about these fascinating creatures.

Event times are advertised as 10am-2pm – you may stop by at any point between these times to complete your trail (but pre-booking for the day is essential, see terms & conditions). Please note that most of the trail follows unsurfaced paths so may not be suitable for buggies or wheelchairs following periods of heavy rain. There are outdoor tables available should you wish to stay for a picnic lunch. All children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

    Useful info:

-The toilets and baby change will be open however there will not be access to any other areas of the education centre including classrooms.

-Each booked child will receive a handout which features activities and shows the trail route.  You will be able to collect your event handout when you check in with a member of our team.

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do. A dustbin, a homeless lady and an extra-ordinary tale of courage

In a makeshift cardboard home-made home

Lives a kind old lady with a heart of gold.

    Rescuing creatures great and small,

Dustbin Doris will amaze us all.

It’s bin collection day and our two heroic waste collectors Max and Ola are racing to make up lost time. But what’s this? A dustbin that refuses to release its contents! What could be attached? It’s Doris, the dotty old lady who lives in the park. A struggle ensues as she clings onto her possessions.  But every bin has a silver liner. So, when the pair of refuse loaders realise that ‘one man’s trash is another woman’s treasure’, an amazing trove of wonderous tales recycle their way out of the rubbish.

Rhubarb Theatre, known for their imaginative styles of storytelling, perform their latest bin-full of fantasy for all the family. Prepare for joy and sadness, laughter and tears & surprises around every corner. Dustbin Doris is waste-deep in theatrical play, puppetry, mask, dance, song and lots of laughter.

Arlington Arts Mary Hare, Newbury RG14 3BQ

    Elles Bailey

2019 has been a hell of a year for the super-smoky-voiced, hard-working, far-touring chanteuse Elles Bailey. On 8th March, she dropped her eagerly-anticipated second album ‘Road I Call Home’ to rave reviews, with the album charting in the Official UK Country Charts & Americana charts, gaining over 1.3 million streams since its release and reaching No.1 on the Amazon Blues Bestseller chart.

Like its chart-topping predecessor, ‘Road I Call Home’ features co-writing contributions from high-calibre collaborators, including British hit-making legend and Ivor Novello Award winner Roger Cook, storied Memphis and Nashville giant Bobby Wood, as well as Dan Auerbach (of Akron, Ohio powerhouses The Black Keys) on the infectious  ‘Little Piece of Heaven’

As a self-confessed ‘rolling stone’ – Elles genuinely does call ‘the road’ home. She’s continued her wide-ranging headline touring throughout the UK and Europe and was also special guest support for Grammy Award winner Mike Farris, Martin Harley, The Kris Barras Band and King King.

2018/19 has also seen Elles Bailey move up the festival listings becoming a featured artist at key festivals including Black Deer, Swing Wesplaar, Ramblin’ Man Fair, & The GB R&B Festival. She also headed stateside for the International House Of Songs Summit in Arkansas and played Nashville’s Americana Fest.

2020 sees Elles touring the UK in March, Germany in April and playing many more international stages including taking to the high seas for the Joe Bonamassa ‘Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea’ cruise alongside the man himself, Joe Bonamassa, King King, Samantha Fish,Walter Trout and many more.

As well as being an international touring artist, playing sold out shows all over the world, Elles is a self confessed DIY artist and If ever there was a fine example of the Do It Yourself nature of the music business then Elles Bailey is it. From rather humble beginnings Elles has by dint of hard work and talent smashed through and past much bigger artists and bigger industry players – not least major record labels – by taking time and effort to really understand the brave new world that is today’s landscape, being brave, breaking rules, making a few mistakes (always part of the learning process) and just powering through obstacles and doing whatever it takes. Her work ethic, both on the road, at shows, and in front of her spreadsheets is nothing short of phenomenal.

No surprise but 2020 is full of tour dates for Miss Bailey on he road that she really does call home. When she arrives near you, don’t think twice, get there.  A great evening and a long musical friendship will be waiting.

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy.

T.Rextasy have been performing around the world for over 25 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.

Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages – If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you.
