Ardington School of Crafts was founded in 2012 in the village of Ardington in South Oxfordshire and, Yvonneand SimonSonsino, took over as directors in December 2016.

They are both passionate about Arts & Crafts and are working hard to develop the curriculum to ensure all tastes and ambitions are covered. They  now offer one of the widest and highest quality range of onsite and online Arts & Crafts in the UK and pride themselves in working only with outstanding tutors.

    ONSITE Landscape in Oils

    This two-day, onsite workshop is suitable for beginners and those with experience

    Workshop Details.
    Your tutor teaches through practical demonstration and one to one support; studio tuition will evolve to technically organise oil paint media to create a successful landscape painting.

    AQThe characteristics of the local topography and extending Oxfordshire landscape will be used to discover working approaches for ‘setting up’ to paint outdoors, and how to manage the changing visual elements of light, shadow and colour.

    OIARSULA possible local site visit may be programmed depending on the weather.

    The tutor instructs students in health and safety issues relevant to this workshop.

    Skills/Techniques Covered
    As well as the general description of the landscape picture plane and drawing you will work through fundamental painting approaches such as using supporting ‘ground tints’, wet in wet (al fresco) mark making, scumbling, impasto and glazing will be taught.

    Materials
    Materials are not included in your workshop fee.

    Most materials including oil colour and mediums will be provided by the tutor.

    The approximate cost of these will be £25.00 to £30.00, payable to the tutor during the course.

    ​Your tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshop.

    Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

    Please Bring With You​

    • Sketch book or pad of Paper A4 or A3
    • Pencils, Eraser, Sharpener
    • Apron
    • Any old cotton rags
    • Suitable outdoor clothes / footwear etc​

    Optional - in case we are able to work off-site

    • Outdoor/travel easel if you have one
    • Fold-up chair

    We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a workshop more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.

    ONSITE Plein Air Sketching

    This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for beginners with a little experience and those wishing to improve on their skills

    Workshop Details

    This class is suitable for those who wish to develop skills and strategies in painting and drawing direct from the natural environment.

    The emphasis will be practical and encourage you to work out of doors and get the most from that experience.

    Martin will share with you useful tips he has used for his plein air work and help you gain confidence working out of doors.

    Developing a sketchbook and small-scale drawings. Keeping work fresh and lively.

    You will have time to work on a plein air painting in your preferred media.

    Martin will give a brief presentation on plein air painting based on his contribution to Painting and Drawing.

    Techniques for The Contemporary Artist (Thames and Hudson); this will look at artists who work out of doors and what we may usefully learn from their practice.

    Skills/Techniques Covered

    • Composition and principles of basic perspective
    • Working speedily to record changes of lightand weather
    • Looking at tonal values and how to read light
    • Mark making and notation to transcribe landscape, architectural features and transient effects.
    • Colour palette and mixing for plein air
    • Developing a portfolio and making plein air sketches suitable for reworking in the studio
    • The use of charcoal and chalk in conjunction with wet media
    • Recording your work digitally for later reference in the studio
    • Portfolio development

    Polymer Clay: A Translucent Star Cane for Christmas 2022

    This one-day workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with experience

    Workshop Details
    Spend the day playing with polymer clay creating decorative items for Christmas such as candle holders and tree decorations, perfect as gifts or keep for yourself.

    Polymer clay is a malleable material that is baked in a domestic oven.

    Available in a rainbow of colours, it can be mixed and blended to create beautiful effects.

    This workshop will show you how to create a polymer clay ‘cane’ in a multi-coloured star design (think of a piece of seaside rock with a pattern running through it) using translucent polymer clay.

    This will be sliced and the pieces used to create a candleholder and tree decorations.

    The translucent clay allows light to glow through to create a magical effect.

    This workshop will introduce novices to the marvels of polymer clay and develop the skills of those already familiar with its addictive qualities!

    • Using a pasta machine
    • Conditioning polymer clay

    • Slicing a polymer clay cane
    • Applying polymer clay to glass​

    Materials
    Materials are not included in the booking fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £7, payable to the tutor during the class. Please bring cash or cheque

    Students - please bring with you:

    • Wet wipes (not water wipes as these may rust my pasta machines)
    • an apron (optional, this is not really that messy).
