The Barn North Sydmonton House, North Sydmonton, Newbury, Hampshire RG20 4UL

    Beautiful Breads

    Only 3 left.

Romilla Arber has been baking bread for many years and is passionate about real bread, made traditionally. She firmly believes that good-quality bread doesn’t make you fat! Industrialised, mass produced bread is the perfect example of how our food culture has broken down. It is made with only profit in mind not what is best for the health of the customer.

On this course you will make a variety of breads (there will be plenty to take home) and enjoy a simple lunch with a glass of wine. You too can fall in love with the art of bread making and learn how to make exquisite artisan loaves in your own kitchen.

Romilla is the author or two cookery books and she has won the prestigious Gourmand Best UK Cookbook award for her second book. She is a passionate advocate of eating a balanced diet and in 2008 founded the Food Education Trust with the aim of working with schools to promote the benefits of home-cooked food.

Romilla is the founder and owner of The Honesty Group which includes the Crown and Garter at Inkpen and the Hartley Arms at Donnington.

Maximum number 8.  All level of abilities welcome.

Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand star in Joel Coen’s bold and fierce adaptation; a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning.

Receiving a vision from a shapeshifting trio of witches (a scene-stealing Kathryn Hunter), Macbeth (Washington), the Thane of Glamis, sets out on a dangerous, bloody path to becoming the King of Scotland, aided by his cunning wife, Lady Macbeth (McDormand).

Breathing new life into the legend with awe-inspiringly stark cinematography which recalls German expressionism, it boasts a stellar supporting cast including Brendan Gleeson (Calvary) and Harry Melling (Harry Potter, The Queen’s Gambit). The Tragedy of Macbeth is a proudly theatrical reimagining, that has been masterfully realised by director Joel Coen (Fargo, The Big Lebowski).

    Spike

I’m not acting crazy. I’m the genuine article.”

It’s the booming fifties, and Britain is in the clutches of Goon mania as men, women and children across the country scramble to get their ear to a wireless for another instalment of The Goon Show. While Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers get down to the serious business of becoming overnight celebrities, fellow Goon and chief writer Spike finds himself pushing the boundaries of comedy, and testing the patience of the BBC.

Will Spike’s dogged obsession with finding the funny elevate The Goons to soaring new heights, or will the whole thing come crashing down with the stroke of a potato peeler?

SPIKE is an absurdly funny new play by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman (The Wipers Times, Trial By Laughter, A Bunch of Amateurs) that delves into the inner workings of one of our most unique and brilliantly irreverent comedy minds.

The Goons extracts were used with the kind permission of Spike Milligan Production.

    Praise for The Wipers Times:

    ‘A quite magnificent stage play’

    Libby Purves, Theatre Cat

‘Elegantly structured, wonderfully theatrical and perfectly paced’

Working on a selection of plain newsprint, black and white newspaper, coloured newspaper, black tissue paper and coloured tissue paper, you will learn how to use the canting (tool for applying the wax) as well as other methods of applying the wax. The whole paper is then covered with a layer of dye. When dry, more wax is applied to “save” areas of the dye and a second dye is applied. The process is repeated until only small areas remain unwaxed, and the final, dark dye is applied. You will repeat this process on a number of different papers, and may then put some of these together to make a collage.
