“It’s not a bit like a car or a boat you know, it’s like a bird, it’s the most magical feeling I’ve ever had.”

May 1930. Amy Johnson has a dream, but just how far will her dream take her?

As the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, Amy’s career reached new heights, but the outbreak of the Second World War changed everything, and she finds herself facing her greatest challenge yet. Driven by the need to escape from one life to another, follow Amy’s journey from humble beginnings to become one of Britain’s most influential female aviators.

A powerful play about one of the most inspirational women of the twentieth century,  Lone Flyer returns to The Watermill following a hugely successful run at The Watermill in 2020.

    Turning Back Time

How does the idea of a 1949 Reliance Motor Services lookalike running through the heart of Newbury again grab you? A real blast from the past which also takes in the string of villages along the route to Brightwalton?
It’s all lined up for Saturday 25 September when a little 29-seater Bedford OB of the type that served Reliance so well through wartime and well beyond will leave Newbury Bus Station at 12.15pm. The run will be a re-creation of the old shoppers return bus that last ran in Reliance colours in 1966.
The route will take her through Northbrook Street, Newbury and on via Donnington, Snelsmore, Winterbourne, North Heath, Leckhampstead and Chaddleworth to Brightwalton where she will be parked up at the village hall for an hour or two from 1pm.
We won’t presume to take up space on this page for further information, which we will add over the next few days. If you are interested please follow our page here: https://www.facebook.com/reliancemotorservicesmemories

    Escape from Extinction

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

A pioneering feature narrated by Academy Award® Winner, Dame Helen Mirren, Escape From Extinctionexplores the critical efforts of major zoological organisation’s to preserve millions of species on the verge of disappearing forever.

Featuring rare footage of endangered animals and interviews with the world’s leading animal welfare and conservation specialists, this powerful and eye-opening feature explores the work of zoos and aquariums across the globe as they race to protect and preserve animals from all seven of Earth’s continents. With the very web of life on Earth being threatened in what scientists are calling a ‘Sixth Mass Extinction’, such organisations are nature’s last arks of hope in preserving the rich legacy of life on our world. Without this help – and the global engagement of the public – the biological treasures we hope to bequeath to our children and our grandchildren may disappear forever within a generation.

In this series of workshops she’ll help you hurdle the terror of the blank page and show you a number of techniques for unlocking your creative thinking skills.

You’ll use a range of media to explore drawing, colour and composition and come away with a sketchbook to be proud of.

Materials: A sketchbook will be provided with some basic materials. Participants can bring any 2D media and collage materials that they enjoy working with.

This course will take place in person at The Base.

Opening with a snapshot of life in the women’s camp at Greenham circa 1983 then shifting to a contemporary extinction rebellion, the play gently pokes fun at the petty squabbling of the protestors as a contrast to the serious fights in which they are involved. The play is, in turns, wry, tense and ultimately poignant as a veteran Greenham woman proclaims that, ‘it’s very easy to laugh at passion.’
