Gardening Through the Seasons with Margaret Finch

The Garden centres now have a good selection of seed potatoes it’s a good time to buy while they are in good condition and get them to start chitting in preparation for planting in March. When you have selected there’s many varieties or if you are new to potato growing try a first early for new small potatoes so delicious boiled and served with butter and fresh garden mint the flavour is amazing. These could be ready in 10 – 12weeks. Plant 3 seed potatoes in a bucket potato bag.
My favourite early varieties Foremost and Rocket
Also try a main crop to give more versatility great for chips, roasting, jackets and mash
You only need 1 seed potato per bucket or bag. Always water well and keep covering with compost or soil and obviously grow well in the open ground. There is nothing nicer than straight well earthed up potato rows.
My favourite main crop Desiree red full of flavour and king Edwards best roast potato for Christmas.
I put my seed potatoes in trays to chit egg boxes are brilliant in a cool frost-free light place, in a couple of weeks the buds will start to appear they need to be stubby and short.
Traditionally planted on Good Friday but as you know this moves each year and being the15 th April this year I will keep

an eye on the weather and hopefully plant mid to end of March.
I’m also potting up Shallots one per 3 cm pot to give them a start in a cold Greenhouse ready to plant out in March when conditions are good.
My favourite varieties Golden Gourmet for pickling and the longer banana shallot.

It’s great to see the evenings drawing out and spring appearing our garden Year is off again
