History Calling: Exhibition and Showcase of the astounding invention, the Mobile Phone, at its home Parish Church in Shaw-cum Donnington by Mr Ben Wood of Donnington, co-founder and curator of the Mobile Phone Museum.
Heritage Open Day 10 September: 2.30 pm St. Mary's Church | Shaw-cum-Donnington : Astounding Inventions: History is calling
Shaw cum Donnington “is home to telecoms giant, Vodafone, who made the first call on a UK cellular network, at just after midnight on January 1, 1985.” The first mobile phone was scarcely moveable, especially when you needed a backpack just to carry the battery!
Few of us today, less than 40 years later, realise that a small lightweight box of tricks that we can carry around in a pocket has more computing power than it took to land astronaut Neil Armstrong on the moon for his walk around the Sea of Tranquillity in 1969.
Today “History is Calling” and the caller is Mr Ben Wood, a parishioner living in Shaw cum Donnington, who is now seasoned guest performer of Radio and Television: “The One Show, Inside Out, and Collector’s Lot” to name just some..
Ben began collecting phones by accident after rescuing some from a skip at Vodafone, where he worked in 1995. as part of the team that launched SMS and mobile data. Last year, Ben Launched the charity Mobile Phone Museum with friend and co-curator, Matt Chatterley: https://www.mobilephonemuseum.com/
At launch the collection had 2,000 unique devices from 200 different manufacturers, and now has more than 5,000. Ben has kindly agreed to present just some of this unique collection and the social history that the collection charts at our Heritage Open Day. Ben will also provide a taster for the Charity’s education
