L’Homme du Train (The Man on the Train) (2001)
A film by Patrice Leconte.
A mysterious stranger, Milan (Johnny Hallyday), steps off a train in an unfamiliar place and looks for a pharmacy to buy aspirin for a headache. He meets retired school teacher, Manesquier (Jean Rochefort) who apparently is his complete opposite. However, they both realise that they have always wanted the life of the other man……
This film is ‘a comedy-drama of wit, delight and humanity’ and is a ‘funny, moving, poetic and unsentimental look at failure, with two terrific central performances’ (Sunday Times).
The Guardian had it that this ‘emotional relationship between two heterosexual men is such a difficult thing to dramatise, but Leconte brings it off with delicacy and persuasive charm’.
‘Highly entertaining’ – Evening Standard.
‘Masterly’ – Sunday Telegraph.
