This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for beginners with a little experience and those wishing to improve on their skills
Workshop Details
This class is suitable for those who wish to develop skills and strategies in painting and drawing direct from the natural environment.
The emphasis will be practical and encourage you to work out of doors and get the most from that experience.
Martin will share with you useful tips he has used for his plein air work and help you gain confidence working out of doors.
Developing a sketchbook and small-scale drawings. Keeping work fresh and lively.
You will have time to work on a plein air painting in your preferred media.
Martin will give a brief presentation on plein air painting based on his contribution to Painting and Drawing.
Techniques for The Contemporary Artist (Thames and Hudson); this will look at artists who work out of doors and what we may usefully learn from their practice.
Skills/Techniques Covered
- Composition and principles of basic perspective
- Working speedily to record changes of lightand weather
- Looking at tonal values and how to read light
- Mark making and notation to transcribe landscape, architectural features and transient effects.
- Colour palette and mixing for plein air
- Developing a portfolio and making plein air sketches suitable for reworking in the studio
- The use of charcoal and chalk in conjunction with wet media
- Recording your work digitally for later reference in the studio
- Portfolio development
