This four-part LivePlus™ online course is ideal for beginners and improvers. You do not need to be able to draw or paint in the traditional sense to enjoy this course - all you need is an open mind! This course is for anyone who wants to push their boundaries and is willing to explore & experiment.
A delve into the world of abstraction – or at least a few steps in that direction!
This is a course designed to push your ideas and working methods away from realism and towards a more abstracted interpretation of your subject matter.
Each week we will look at the work of different artists as a starting point for the session. We will focus on the different elements of a painting or mixed media piece - line, colour, shape, pattern, mark-making - and then using that structure we will look at still life, landscape & natural forms.
Karen will be showing you work by some of her favourite artists – Ben Nicolson, Barbera Rae, William Scott, and Matisse as well as a number of contemporary painters - and the projects, exercises and demos will be based around their work. You will also be encouraged to seek out your own sources of reference to inspire you.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Creative drawing approaches to generate ideas and starting points
- Collage – making and using collage papers both as backgrounds & design elements
- Constructing textural backgrounds & combining them with acrylic paint & linework
- Exploring colour, mark-making & surface pattern with mixed media media
