Gin Lilies

West Berkshire Villagers | Events | What’s On | Things to Do

We will be working ‘alla prima’ in thick oil paint and aiming to capture the beauty of both the blooms and the glass bottle. Bring along your favourite (empty) gin bottles to display the lilies.  We will look at how to light, display and crop the composition, focusing on colour, brushwork and applying the paint in a dynamic and interesting way.

What to bring:
  • A Gin bottle

  • A spotlight / Anglepoise desk lamp

  • An ipad / phone / tablet.

  • A selection of synthetic brushes to include some ‘short flat’ synthetic acrylic brushes.  I like to use:

    Daler Rowney System 3: short flat ¼”, ½”, ¾”.

Daler Rowney System 3 filbert size 2

Small round size 1 synthetic brush.

  • Palette knife - Winsor and newton size 22 or similar

  • ‘Liquin’ painting medium

  • A flat mixing palette - paper palettes are fine. (£2 in ‘The Works’)

  • Oil colours as follows - Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarine Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, French Utramarine, Phthalo Blue.

  • A flat mixing palette - tear off paper palettes are fine. (£2 in ‘The Works’)

  • A box to take your work home in (to fit a thin 8” x 8” board)

  • A jar and some low odour thinners/white spirit substitute for cleaning your brushes, some rags or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean.

If you’re trying oils for the first time- starter boxes of oil paint can be bought from Micklems Farm for use on the day at additional cost of £6.

  • Included on the day:
    • Lilies

    • 8” x 8” gessoboard

    • Any other materials not specified for the students to bring

    • Expert tuition

    • 1 to 1 guidance

    • Detailed demonstrations

    • A selection of tea, freshly brewed coffee, biscuits and delicious cakes

And of course you take your wonderful creations from the day. If you share any photographs of your day here and/or your finished work, we’d love to see them so please tag us @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops or use the hashtag #micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops.

Terms - Fee is payable on booking. If, having booked, you cancel your booking, we are unable to offer a refund. However, you may nominate someone else to attend the workshop or class in your place by notifying us using the contact page on the Micklems Farm website. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours prior to the workshop date. We will only cancel due to insufficient places sold and you will be refunded the full amount paid.

    Level: All levels welcome.

  • Event Satus- Current

Following government announcements, we will be reopening on Monday 17th May. We have contacted all students who had booked onto rescheduled workshops, if you have booked and haven’t received the email then please check your junk. If you are booked to attend a workshop then you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until it’s rescheduled or a refund. If you hold your place and cannot attend the new date then you will be offered a refund or the opportunity to book onto another workshop. If you have booked using a gift card, you will be offered the opportunity to hold your place until the new date is announced or a credit note.

Over the first lockdown, we spent time implementing various measures to make our studio as safe as possible for our students and tutors.

With just under 1000 sq ft of floor space, a new large demo area with a wall mounted monitor allows students to be socially distanced during tutor demonstrations and our ten work stations are now set further apart with more open flow areas in the centre of the studio.

We have a central hands-free hand sanitising station which students and tutors use upon entry and throughout the day.

We use our very own fogging system using anti-viral disinfectant (tested against Coronavirus) after every workshop.

We are providing disposable cutlery at the tea and coffee station and paper hand towels for hand washing. We ask students to bring their own mugs and face masks.

As far as the weather allows, the large patio doors onto the garden will be kept open and we will have tables and chairs for eating lunch outside.

Students and tutors will be able to use our open plan kitchen/dining space and large conservatory to enjoy their lunch socially distanced and as the weather gets warmer we’ll have marquees erected in the grounds for students to use.

We hope that these measures will reassure you that we have done as much as we can to ensure your safety when attending workshops.
