Gel Plate Printing Techniques

10.00 - 4.00

If you have no idea what gel plate printing is, have a gel plate and don’t know what to do with it, or want a refresher on some of the many printing techniques, then this is the workshop for you. A gel plate is a slightly squishy surface which is absolutely perfect for making monoprints. Be warned it is an extremely addictive process! In this workshop we will include mark making, direct painting, stencilling, stamping, and magazine image transfers. These techniques can be used for representational work or completely abstract pieces. Be prepared to experiment and you will go home with an arm full of prints! Suitable for all levels of experience.

What to bring:

  • If you have your own gel plate please bring it, otherwise gel plates will be available for loan on the day. There are two main brands Gelli Arts and Gel Press, and these work well with acrylic paints. There is a third brand, Speedball, and if you have one of these then you will need to bring Speedball inks, rather than acrylic paints

  • Acrylic paint in your choice of colours (eg primaries, black, white and some metallics and perhaps something wacky such as fluorescent pink)

  • Student grade or craft paint is fine. Pebeo and Hobbycraft brands work well and are a good price. Paint with bits in (eg glitter) should not be used

  • Roller (or brayer)

  • Paper - please bring about 40 to 50 sheets of paper to print on, eg printer paper, black and coloured paper, text or music paper, smooth cartridge, smooth card, sugar paper, newsprint. Smooth and/or absorbent papers work best. Please be aware that very textured papers and photo papers do not work well for printing on

  • A couple of paint brushes (these will be used with acrylic paint)

  • Water jar

  • Baby wipes

Gel plates will also be available to buy on the day. If you would like to buy one please contact us in advance to reserve.

Included on the day:

  • Any other materials not specified for the students to bring

  • Expert tuition

  • 1 to 1 guidance

  • Detailed demonstrations

  • A selection of tea, freshly brewed coffee, biscuits and delicious cakes

And of course you take your wonderful creations from the day. If you share any photographs of your day here and/or your finished work, we’d love to see them so please tag us @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops or use the hashtag #micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops.
