Coptic Stitch Handmade Sketchbook

Tutor: Janina Maher

Coptic stitch is a beautiful exposed book binding style that looks like chain stitch. These books have an open spine which means the pages open completely flat. Coptic style books are ideal as gifts or to keep for yourself as a diary or notebook. During this workshop you will make an A5 portrait book from scratch. We will start by trimming the inside pages into the right size for the books and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’. The next stage will be preparation of the covers, cutting these from greyboard, and then covering with your choice from a range of decorative papers. We will then make the holes for sewing and will finally sew all the pages and cover together using Coptic stitch. There will be many suggestions for how to take this binding style further in your own projects after the workshop. The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience. There is a bit of measuring but it is kept to a minimum! We will be cutting, glueing and sewing so some manual dexterity is needed.

Items for students to bring:

Scissors, basic drawing kit: pencil, eraser, sharpener, blunt end sewing needle with large eye e.g. size 20 tapestry needle.
Basic cutting kit: cutting mat (A3 or larger if possible), craft knife, metal ruler. Please note that a scalpel is too delicate for cutting the card, you need a more robust craft knife. 2 pieces waxed paper to protect your book on the way home. The waxed paper from boxes of breakfast cereal works very well (please wash out the crumbs first!)

All the following tools will be available for loan but if you already have them please bring them as there will be less need for sharing:
Bone folder, awl / braddle (for making holes), paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing paper).

The tutor will have extra tools available for sale during the course if you would like them.

If you would like to take the materials for a second book to be made at home then there would be an extra £5 materials charge.

Includes - Materials, tea, coffee and biscuits.
