Bookbinding- Buttonhole Stitch

Tutor: Janina Maher

In this workshop Janina will take you through you all the steps involved in making a buttonhole book with a cutaway spine.  The project will be a hard back landscape A6 book, with paper cover, book cloth detailing, cutaway spine, and buttonhole stitching. We will start by cutting greyboard into the correct size for the book and making the cut away element. The front and back covers will be covered with a decorative paper, and the spine and hinge areas reinforced with bookcloth. The cover will then be placed under weight to dry flat. Next we will trim the inside pages to fit (using the fold and slice technique), nesting the folded pages into ‘signatures’. Once we have made holes in the paper for sewing, the final stage will be to sew the pages into the book cover using a long buttonhole stitch and linen thread.

All the stages will be fully demonstrated as a group, with plenty of help and support on an individual basis during the day.

What to bring:

  • Cutting tools: Cutting mat, sharp cutting knife or craft knife (preferably not a scalpel, as this is too delicate for the greyboard), metal ruler, scissors

  • Sharp pencil, rubber eraser

  • Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (eg tapestry needle size 20)

  • Awl or braddle (for making holes in paper and card)

Optional tools if you have them, and which make your life easier! If you don’t have them, they can be borrowed on the day.

  • Bone folder (for creasing paper)

  • T square ruler (for getting accurate 90 degree corners)

  • Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing down the paper to size)

  • For gluing preferably a small 2” foam roller and tray. If you don’t have this then a stencil brush (circular flat ended brush).

Janina will also have a few tools, and extra materials available to purchase on the day, if you are interested.

Included on the day:

  • Any other materials not specified for the students to bring

  • Expert tuition
