Birds and a Brew

Birds and a Brew

17th
March2023
Birds and a BrewSpring should definitely be in the air by mid-March, and this month’s Birds and a Brew is all about the changes in nature triggered by lengthening days and warmer temperatures.

Birds will have begun to sing and breed, buds will be opening, and insects, amphibians and reptiles will be emerging into the sunshine.

After a biscuit and a brew with a talk about what to look out for, you’ll go for a walk to find signs of Spring around the NDC.

Birds and a BrewEggs and Nests.

Most of our breeding birds will be busy with nests, eggs or chicks by now and you may be seeing parent Blue Tits, Robins, Blackbirds and other garden birds darting into hedges and bird boxes at home.

This month’s talk is about the fascinating science behind the creation of eggs; their colours, shapes and sizes; and the amazing nests built by birds, with such breath-taking skills – but no hands.

I’m glad to say that it is illegal to disturb nests or nesting birds, and to take or own their eggs, but the NDC is a lively place at this time of year, and on your walk you will look and listen out for signs of nesting behaviour and bird families.

Surrounded by a mosaic of different habitats, there is fantastic wildlife to see all year round.

Whether you have just an hour, a day or a week to give, and whatever your skills, there’s an opportunity for you to volunteer with the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) near where you live.
