    To support with remote learning, The Watermill Theatre are delighted to be offering schools a bespoke online programme of activities, giving students the opportunity to learn from inspirational and leading theatre professionals.

    There are several workshop options to choose from, each designed and adapted especially for KS1 – KS5 students. These engaging and interactive sessions will support remote learning, inspire your students and deliver a shared experience of enjoyment. As well as practical workshops, we are also able to offer Q&A sessions with experienced creative artists, actors and directors.

    When life gets on top of us, we could do with a change of scene. This relaxed monthly group is for adults to enjoy some time to play and connect through drama and creativity. No previous experience is necessary.

    Cost: These sessions are generously funded by Greenham Trust and are free for everyone!

    Join jewellery designer and qualified teacher Mandy Allport in a unique Bohemia workshop experience; making sustainable, ethical jewellery using 100% reclaimed beads.

    Immerse yourself in the joys of jewellery making with a wide selection of high quality beads from pearls, crystals, glass & wood. You will be taught how to use specialist jewellery tools and how to manipulate wire and sterling silver clasps.

    The whole workshop has an ethos of wellbeing for the planet and also wellbeing for you through using sustainable materials and embracing the Bohemia spirit!

    Each participant will learn how to make pair of beautiful Bohemia earrings and a bracelet and be able to take their creations home in ‘Born Again Bohemia’ Eco gift boxes.

    At The Woodspeen we believe that a good understanding of traditional butchery skills give the cook an advantage for getting the most out of each cut. Just as important as the skill to prep is the skill to cook and we will run through time and temperature to cook your meat perfect every time. From keeping your stews and casseroles tasty with the meat being moist and tender, we’ll be breaking down chicken, duck and cooking lamb and beef, explaining the cuts as we go along and the best cooking methods to use.

    A great introduction to chalk paint using Frenchic environmentally friendly chalk and mineral paint. This is a full day workshop ideal for complete beginners and upwards. Frenchic Furniture Paint has no hidden nasties. It has also gone through rigorous testing to be certified for use on children’s toys (EN 71:3).

    You will explore the different techniques of painting your furniture from preparation to finish. You will need to supply a small piece of furniture you wish to upcycle, such as a small table or bedside unit. Paint, waxes and brushes are provided, but we strongly recommend you wear clothes suitable for painting or overalls to protect your clothing.

    We are pleased to be able to rerun this popular Italian class, taught by our Neapolitan tutor Mariella Bliss.

    In Italy hardly a meal is served without pasta, it is the most important part of a meal. Join Mariella to discover the delights of making fresh pasta from scratch. You will be taught the traditional egg pasta but also the water based semolina style pasta perfect for vegetarians and vegans, as well as learning to colour and shape your pasta, all while Mariella tells the story of the perfect combinations of pasta shapes and sauces.

    Your course will culminate in a meal of fresh pasta and a sauce that you will learn to prepare.

    Create your very own Italian feast and master the foundations of this wonderful cuisine in this two-hour class. To start, you’ll learn how to create the ultimate Italian soul food – a beautiful aubergine parmigiana, layered with Parmesan and tomatoes. While that’s in the oven, you’ll whip up a fresh salad inspired by the world-class citrus fruits grown on the Amalfi coast, before moving on to a super-speedy tiramisù.

    Our chefs will walk you through the recipe steps and cook along with you, demonstrating some core knife skills and answering any questions you may have.

    YOU WILL NEED (serves 2):
    1 large aubergine
    olive oil
    1 shallot
    1 clove of garlic
    1 large pinch of dried oregano
    1 tablespoon tomato purée
    300g chopped tomatoes (from a tin)
    a few sprigs of fresh basil (10g)
    30g Parmesan cheese
    40g block of mozzarella cheese
    ½ a bulb of fennel
    ½ a red onion
    ½ a cucumber
    1 handful of radishes, with tops
    1 small handful of ice cubes (optional)
    1 tablespoon good-quality red wine vinegar
    good-quality extra virgin olive oil
    3 oranges
    100ml good-quality espresso
    15g caster sugar
    75ml Kahlúa
    160g mascarpone
    ½ a vanilla pod
    12 savoiardi biscuits

They start with a pencil sketch, and work with a variety of brushes to create a vibrant and stylised town scene using watercolours. The focus is on one point perspective drawing, colour blending and application, wet on wet and lots more, to build this colourful painting. Expert tuition given throughout the day.

    This course is an introduction to the skills and techniques involved in Glass Fusing and Slumping. We will make three items during the day – glass jewellery and two kiln-fired pieces (a bowl/platter and either a coaster, window hanging or a wind chime). You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials.

    Project 1: You will create fused glass jewellery pieces and cabochons to use as pendants, earrings, fridge magnets or keyring holders.  This will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with a variety of glass materials including frits, confetti and glass stringers etc. and see how they react once fired.

    Project 2: During this project you will be able to develop your glass cutting skills using both a strip cutter or cutting freehand. You can create either a small wall hanging, coasters, or a wind chime. You will also be able to experiment melting stringers over a flame to add to your design ideas.

    Project 3: You will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter. Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for this process. This technique will include two firings, both Fusing and Slumping.

    Skills/Techniques Covered: Design techniques and special effects, Fusing processes, Glass Cutting Techniques, Melting glass stringers over a flame, Preparation of moulds for slumping, Health and Safety when working with glass materials.

    Level: This course is designed as an introduction to Glass Fusing and Slumping but can be adapted to suit a range of abilities.

    Materials are not included in your course fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £35-£45 (depending on size), payable to the tutor during the course.  Findings for jewellery, keyrings and magnets are optional extras; these along with silver chains, can be purchased from the tutor.

    Items to bring: A sketchbook/notebook and pen, a dust mask and safety glasses, surgical gloves, an apron, an old but clean dishcloth, wear closed-toe shoes.

    Collection of Work: Projects will be taken away for firing in a kiln and will be returned to Micklems Farm for collection.

    Together we will work through a stage by stage process to create a Pet Portrait in Oils- using an ‘islands to oceans’ method of working.  We are aiming to make the eyes come alive and give the animal and your painting lots of personality! I hope to inspire you with some new ideas and techniques to take away with you and apply to your own work.

    You will be working from your own image, either from an I-pad OR you can use a photograph at least 5” x 5”.  The animal’s eyes must be clear and in focus. Crop your image so that it is square.  The head of the animal should take up most of the frame. For good (free to use) reference images see www.pixabay.com The better the reference image – the better the painting!

    Items to bring: A photograph of your animal or an image on an ipad / tablet. A black and white print out of your square cropped image as large as you can make it on an A4 piece of paper. A sharp pencil and a 30cm ruler. A selection of synthetic brushes to include some ‘short flat’ synthetic acrylic brushes.  I like to use – Daler Rowney System 3: short flat ¼”, ½”, ¾”.  Daler Rowney System 3 filbert size 2. Small round size 1 synthetic brush. Palette knives – Winsor and newton size 22 or similar. ‘Liquin’ painting medium. A flat mixing palette – paper palettes are fine. (£2 in ‘The Works’). A clean plastic takeaway box with a lid. An empty cereal box to take your work home in.

    Acrylic colours as follows – Titanium White, Cerulean Blue, plus: Naples yellow if you are painting a white animal, Cadmium Orange if you are painting a brown animal, Quinacridone Red if you are painting a black animal. A good size jar for low odour thinners/white spirit substitute for cleaning your brushes, some rags or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean.

    Oil colours as follows – Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarine Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, French Utramarine, Phthalo Blue.

    If you’re trying oils for the first time- oil paint and medium can be supplied for use on the day at additional cost of £6.

    In this exciting day, learn the art of Kirigami – Japanese paper cutting – and apply it to textiles. You will learn how to create freezer paper stencils, and how to foil fabric to create your own exciting abstract designs in bold colour combinations. We will use fabric paints and create one or two panels 40cm square – large enough to make two stunning cushions or tote bags.

    Newbury was the location for two major battles during the English Civil War. These are explored in this online talk by local historian Dr David Peacock, along with the siege of Donnington Castle.

    Where did they take place, who was involved and what happened?

    Speaker Dr David Peacock writes, researches and talks on the history of the Newbury area from the Stone Age to the present day. He is the author of the 2011 edition of The Story of Newbury, and of the 2018 Newbury Roman Cemetery.

    Essentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vein of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time, Wille and the Bandits try to take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up.

    The use of more bizarre instrumentation and eclectic influences in the song writing often pushes them more into a world music or progressive category. Having toured with artists such as Deep Purple through to the John Butler trio and played major festivals across Europe, the band seem to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances.

    They have received great critical acclaim, being voted in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and reaching number 2 in the UK blues chart with their first single on downloads alone. Now touring their third independently released studio album Wille and the Bandits fan base, repertoire of sounds,
    styles and innovation seems to be growing at an exponential rate.

    The band are praised in the press for their albums; bursting at the seams with textures, originality and soul. Rock legends such as Ian Paice, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi have also praised the band’s musicianship and their unique edge to Rock and Blues.

    Perfect for those who have never crocheted or those who are looking to learn some new crochet skills!

    The workshop will cover all the crochet basics from holding the hook and yarn, brief history, Yarn Weights and fibre properties, learning the chain, learning the most common stitches, how to work in the round. We will then make a start on how to crochet Granny squares. You will go away with lots of Content, a good start on your crochet journey and the workshop will also include access to online video of all we have covered during the session.

    Each participant will be taken at their own pace and we will work slowly through the content at first to ensure each learner is confident in what they are doing.

    Please remember to bring your face covering with you as visitors are required to wear them in the building, unless you are exempt from wearing one, or if you are eating or drinking. If you remove it to eat or drink you must put it back on when you have finished.

    Precious metal clay has taken the jewellery world by storm! It is a fantastic material to work with as it has the versatility of clay and once fired it turns into 99.9% silver. We will look at designs you can create, either earrings or a pendant, then show you how to make a moulding compound which will be used to cast your chosen object or texture. The PMC is then pressed into the mould, fired with a torch and polished using a rotary polisher. Liver of sulphur may then be applied to enhance the texture/design. The pieces will then be finished – by forging silver ear wires and piercing the final piece to create earrings or creating a hanging bail for a pendant. You will be amazed at the results you will achieve!

    Using simplification, mark-making and a loose impressionistic approach we will learn how to tackle a busy subject and make it manageable!

    We will create a collaged ground using text, tissue and patterned papers as the starting point for our image. We will then work over this with layers of acrylic paint – spattering, dripping, and scraping to create a loose impression of a harbour scene, adding more collage elements as we need them.

    Further layers of paint, simple ways to depict boats and adding detail and linework with pen, ink and pastel make the whole image come alive. A fun mixed media approach suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to work in a free and forgiving way… if you don’t like a bit just cover it up with more collage!

    What to bring: Heavy watercolour paper (approx. 350gsm) or mountboard / back of sketchpad (painted white if you’re using this) or MDF (painted white).

    Lightweight patterned & plain papers for collage  – whatever you have. Drawing pencil, Waterproof fineliner pen in a dark colour or dark acrylic ink and a dip pen or fine brush.  A waterproof white pen or ink would be useful but not essential (Posca pens are great). Oil pastels / wax crayons – whatever you have (don’t buy specially). Acrylic matt medium (the gel sort, not the fluid medium– Winsor & Newton, Pebeo & Liquitex all make one).

    Acrylic paints – whatever you have – if buying specially just buy primary colours and white. Mixing palette, brushes (whatever you have), kitchen sponge, small offcuts off cardboard / old credit card / small roller if you have one (not essential). Kitchen roll, water pot, Scissors & craft knife.

    Found objects for printing such as bubble wrap, ribbed card, anything with an interesting texture or pattern (wallpaper, food packaging etc). Inspiration / source material / sketches of landscapes (the tutor will also bring some images as starting points).

    This workshop explores the wonderful art of lettering using faux calligraphy techniques; a lettering technique to imitate the style of modern calligraphy using everyday pens. The workshop will begin with an overview of faux calligraphy and some lettering exercises to help you create letter forms. You will then use these skills to create your own wording on a slate sign, with a few words of your choosing using chalk pens. Choose to use this sign for your home or garden, as a snack platter or make this as a special wedding, anniversary, new home, birthday or Christmas gift for someone special.

    This technique is ideal for individuals who would like to explore modern calligraphy more, or who struggle using a pointed pen, but want to create a similar lettering style that a nib produces.

    All materials are provided. Simply arrive with an idea of what to put onto your slate piece. For your planning, the slate measures 28cm x 21cm.

    Introduction to Glass Fusing- 2 Projects

    Join Shirely Eccles for an introduction to the skills and techniques involved in glass fusing and slumping.

    We will have the option to make a two kiln-fired pieces; a bowl/platter and either coasters, a suncatcher or a wind chime. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials.

    In project 1 you can create either a small wall hanging, coasters, sun catcher or a wind chime.

    In project 2 you will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter.

    Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for this process as the technique will include two firings.

    These will be taken away for firing in a kiln and will be returned to The Base for you to collect after the course
