    Greenham Control Tower Tours 2019

Greenham Control Tower, Burys Bank Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG19 8BZ

What was Noah’s Ark doing on Greenham Common? Who was No Bones Billy? Why was the Millenium Falcon here? These and other questions will be answered in a lively illustrated canter through the curious history of Greenham Common from prehistory to today

The Control Tower is the focal point for exploring the massively important part Greenham Common played in WW2, the Cold War and the protest against nuclear warfare. Before the building of an airfield, the common land was the site of an ill-fated ambush during the English Civil War, a WW1 training ground and an inspiration for the novel ‘Watership Down’.

The tower is open to visitors every weekend but on Saturday Sept. 21st your family is invited to a special activity day which will include an entertaining and interactive talk on the curious history of the common. There will be a range of fun activity guides to help you explore the tower and learn about the people who worked on the USAF base here, and the protestors who camped at the gates and disrupted the convoys of cruise missiles that were kept in the imposing bunkers. There will be a guided walk onto the common to what remains of what was once one of the longest runways in Europe where you can experience what it might have been like to parachute into Normandy on D Day. Children can have their face painted while adults can enjoy some of the best home-made cakes in Berkshire!

There will be three slots to sign up for this top-hole tower experience at 10.30, 12.30 and 2.30. Places are limited so pre-booking is required.

Archive film screening: Working in Shadows

    • 2:00 PM

It’s 1943 and it’s all hands to the pump on the Home Front.

When the Second World War was declared in 1939, the female population of Britain were called upon to fill all manner of roles. Women stepped up on the Home Front and abroad, which saw their lives drastically change.

Elliotts of Newbury was a manufacturing firm whose workforce, during the 1940s, was predominantly female. The factory was adapted to war work, and amongst other things was responsible for producing various Spitfire components as one of many  Shadow Factories.  The firm commissioned a series of films from this period.

Following on from a recent appeal to help identify some of the workers seen on screen we are now pleased to present an unmissable opportunity to see archive footage that has not been publicly shared in over 75 years; brought to life with an exclusive  improvised live score.
