The Vegetarian Italian
To learn about Italian food is to understand Italian people – their respect for food and the role that it has played in their history. For Italians, food represents more than satisfying hunger: it encapsulates history, tradition and folklore, plus an acute and unique awareness of nature and seasonality, which truly provides ‘food for thought’.
We are very excited to introduce cookery writer, Ursula Ferrigno, to teach this vegetarian course. She says:
“My family come from the south of Italy, and because our natural daily diet was so rich in the local vegetables, I learned to prefer eating meals that did not include meat. In fact, it is true to say that most Italians eat a diet that is more vegetarian in essence than that of most other nations in Europe. With the accessibility of a myriad varieties of pastas and pulses, of rice, and the huge abundance of vegetables and fruit, meat plays a distinctly secondary role in daily life and eating. When it is enjoyed, it is usually in quite small quantities, as an afterthought almost: a pasta or fresh vegetable dish is still, to many Italians, the most important intake of the day!”
Her class menu includes:
Papozoi – Roman barley and bean soup
Rotolo ripieno – Spinach pasta roll with ricotta and sage butter
Farinata – Chick pea bake with rosemary and lemon
Torto di melanzana – Layers of aubergine, mozzarella and tomato sauce (family favourite)
Calligraphic fun for beginners and experienced alike. Rustic capitals had their heyday between 4th to 6th centuries, so they’re ripe for a revamp! Have fun exploring what can be created with this script as a basis.

As the clock ticks, the walls around him seem to blur and dissolve as fragments of memories tumble into the room in the form of past lovers. The Hotel Experience becomes a night of doubt, hope, crisis, and unexpected encounters. When the sun rises, he has an important decision to make.

There could be no grander setting for such an opera than Sydney Harbour itself, awash with the light of the city and the Sydney Opera House silhouetted against the setting sun.
Aida is the biggest opera ever performed on the water stage of Sydney Harbour to date. But amid all of the spectacle, the famous ‘Triumphal March’, battle scenes and ancient temples, there’s an emotional heart.
Long after the fireworks have faded from the sky and Amneris sings her quiet, concluding prayer, you’ll see the true mastery of this opera: it is at once a historic epic and an utterly relatable human tragedy.

A circus, dance and theatre production where blind devotion meets desperate ambition.
It’s their final gig. Sandy and Bruno met in the seventies to form a band. She was fame hungry; he was doomed to follow her to the ends of the earth. A one-hit wonder, they’re now washed up, cruelly forgotten. For one night only, they are dusting off their old costumes and preparing for one last gig. Is this their last chance of fame? What will the audience decide?
The Band is a quirky and humorous production with striking visuals and a rousing soundtrack from Levantes Dance Theatre, a company which blends circus, dance and theatre with vibrant aesthetics. Working in collaboration with Ockham Razor’s Tina Koch, the performers are Levantes’ artistic director and designer, Eleni Edipidi and Nathan Johnston, who each bring their unique physicality to the show.

Fauvist Inspired Clay Collage Landscape
£75.00
Tutor: Julie Adlard
This workshop gives you the opportunity to create your own textured clay collage landscape on canvas board. I will teach and guide you through the process of working with paper clay. We will also use embossing techniques and mark making to create wonderful landscape textures in the clay. The piece will be loosely overpainted in acrylics in a fauvist style, a radical use of unnatural colours that separate colour from its usual representational and realistic role. Thereby using colour to create a dynamic atmosphere in a painting. You will leave the workshop with a finished clay collage landscape scene that will be ready for framing or if necessary completed at home.

Indian Dosa Masterclass
Sasi introduces a masterclass in cooking this popular Southern Indian staple. Dosa is a popular crepe that is served mainly for breakfast in India, however it is a flexible dish that can be served throughout the day as breakfast, lunch or dinner. Great for anyone trying to eat less meat or those following a vegan diet.
In this masterclass, you will learn the secrets of this speciality – the right consistency for the ground rice and dal, what the fermented batter should look like, the secret flavours of the essential sambar and the accompanying chutneys, how to produce the potato stuffing that transforms a plain dosa into a ‘masala dosa’, and, of course, the cooking techniques used to produce a perfect dosa.
This course will be part demonstration with some hands on experience. You will be given portions of the dosa batter to take away and use at home. Offer your friends and family a thoroughly different Pancake Day experience!

Gel Plate Printing 1: Textiles
£75
10:00 – 4:00
Taking textiles as our theme we will explore ways of using textiles with the gel plate to make a series of unique monoprints. A gel plate has a slightly squishy surface that releases paint beautifully and is ideal for making quick and easy monoprints. The process is very fast but, be warned, it is also very addictive!
On this workshop we will start by using textiles such as netting, lace, threads and weaving to make monoprints onto paper. In the second part of the workshop we will first look at the types of paint and inks suitable for printing onto fabric and then will print directly onto fabric using leaves, mark making techniques and ‘reverse printing’. There will be lots of ideas and suggestions for projects you can make after the workshop, using your gel plate printed fabrics.
What to bring:
Apron
Gel plate – please see important note below
Acrylic paint – 6 to 8 tubes of acrylic paint in your choice of colours. The Pebeo and Hobbycraft brands work well and are a reasonable price. White and metallic paints work very well on black fabric.
Paper – bring about 30 sheets of assorted A4 paper to print on eg white and coloured printer paper, sugar paper, smooth cartridge, black paper. Not glossy photo paper as this sticks to the gel plate!
Fabrics – bring about 20 pieces of fabric to print on, ideally cut to about A4 and ironed. Black and white polycotton works well but you can also bring close weave cotton, sheers, ribbons, lace
Roller (or brayer)
Rigid acrylic sheet (if you have it) approx. 2mm thick, size A4. Janina will have some to lend.
Paint brushes (suitable for use with acrylic paint)
Water jar
Small mixing plate and a stick for mixing
A handful of different threads and yarns eg raffia, hairy wool, string, cotton thread straggles.
A few leaves and grasses from the garden (please avoid dried out leaves, and anything with sharp bits)
Basic drawing kit: pencil, eraser, sharpener
Baby wipes
Baby oil(you inly need a small amount)
Optional items to bring if you have them:
Fabric paints / fabric printing inks, or an acrylic fabric medium to mix with the acrylic paint (Janina will have some for you to try)
or Daler Rowney System 3 Screen Printing Textile Acrylic
Important note on gel plates.
Gel plates will be available to borrow or buy on the day but please contact Janina in advance to reserve (Janina.maher123@btinternet.com.
If you prefer to buy a gel plate in advance then there are two brands recommended by Janina, Gelli Arts and Gel Press, which both work well with acrylic paints. There is a third brand, Speedball, and if you have one of these then you will need to bring Speedball inks, rather than acrylic paints, as the Speedball gel plate has been formulated to work best with Speedball inks.
Janina will also have some extra rollers / brayers for sale as well as some acrylic paint and some A4 acrylic sheets.
Included on the day:

The group has access to tactile and audio resources from the Living Paintings library enabling them to explore the work of famous artists, architects and designers, before hearing a guest speaker talk about a related subject.
We also invite local artists to share their work and we’ve been very lucky to have some great local speakers in recently, including Simon Vowell of Vallis Green Woodworking, Newbury Embroiderer’s Guild, ceramicist Ursula Waechter and Silk Artist, Helen Mortimer.
‘I find it a very friendly group, we have some laughs and lots of fun! The interest we’ve had from the artists have been really good; they’ve been really willing to introduce their work to those unable to see – at first it doesn’t seem that art can be accessible to visually impaired people but it really can be!’

Newbury’s well loved singer-songwriter Joe Hicks blends pop, blues and folk influences, combining intricate guitar composition with classic pop song-craft. Having made a name for himself as a session guitarist, Hicks released his first solo single at the start of 2017 following a soul searching writing trip to a secluded Cornish Airbnb garage with no internet or phone signal. Soon after he was made ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Week’, receiving extensive radio play across the U.K and also a CLASH ’Track of the Day’ feature. Since then the songwriter has built up a sizeable online following (+1 million Spotify Streams) helped on by extensive support from BBC Introducing and touring of the UK and Europe, including appearances at the Big Feastival, Are You Listening? Festival, over 30 Sofar Sounds shows and a slot supporting BRITS critics choice winner Sam Fender.
Joe’s self-titled album (06.03.20) was recorded at Studio 91 in his home town of Newbury with producer Sam Winfield (Amber Run, Fickle Friends).

Berkshire Chamber Music Festival
22nd -27th February 2021
Welcome to the homepage of the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival, a series of world class chamber music concerts and educational workshops, associated with Bradfield College, located in the heart of Berkshire.
The Berkshire Chamber Music Festival is a series of world class chamber music concerts and educational workshops which happen each Autumn.
At the core of this festival is a desire to share a love of classical music and to engage people of all backgrounds. Through our playing we hope to break down barriers and inspire, bringing an energy that enables people to open their minds and to spark passion among music lovers and those who haven’t yet discovered the power of classical music.
The 2020 festival which celebrates Beethoven’s 250th anniversary will take place (in 2021…!) between the 22nd and the 27th of February. Concerts will take place in Bradfield, Woodhay, Sulhamstead and Winkfield and workshops will reach children at local primary schools in the surrounding areas. We will organise social distancing within our audience to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both audience members and performers. The audience will be limited according to venue size and it will be obligatory to wear a mask. There will be no interval and the entry and exit will be staggered. The concerts will also be livestreamed on our YouTube channel. With a line-up of international musicians, we hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a fantastic celebration of music.
The concept of the festival grew out of a desire for the musicians that teach at Bradfield College to showcase the performing aspect of their portfolio to their students. With world class soloists, orchestral players, band members, chamber musicians and competition winners among our midst, this festival also provides an ideal opportunity to further enhance the reputation of what is an excellent music department, whilst increasing engagement with the local community.
The most exciting part of the festival, and why it is unique, is the willingness to take classical music to a new audience. There is a tangible belief amongst the performers that music is for everyone. This is an opportunity to reach out to youngsters, to engage with them, to open their minds and to transform their lives. In 2019 we reached over 1200 children and we hope to do the same this year with a combination of online and live workshops.
Our ambitious outreach programme takes us to the following schools during the week:
Brightwalton
Cold Ash
Compton
Purley
Spurcroft
St Pauls (Reading)
Stockcross
Sulhampstead
Thatcham Park
Theale Green
Trevelyan
From the incredible response we have already received this will be a wonderful week, opening up a whole new world for a generation where creativity needs to be cherished for so many reasons.
Please do get in touch if you would like further information about future school visits and events.

For the Love of Coils
£75
10:00 – 4:00
Coiling is Debbie’s favourite making technique; and although coiling is sometimes seen as a technique for only absolute beginners – one of Debbie’s aims for this workshop is to convince you this is not the case and that the humble coil pot can, indeed, be a thing of beauty. Focusing our attention on making just one pot (OK maybe 2), we will be making something big.
The day will start with a brief look at some examples of coil pots – both historical and contemporary, images and real examples. Then you can decide on the shape you would like to make and after a demonstration on how to coil, you’ll be off and raring to go. Throughout the day, Debbie will be showing you how to adapt the overall shape, ways of decorating your pots using coils and maybe adding some texture to the surface as well. During the afternoon, you will be able to choose which colour glaze you would like for your work.
The pots will be left with the tutor for firing and glazing and will be available for collection from Micklem’s Farm approx 4-5 weeks following the course. The cost of the clay, glazes and firings is not included in the course fee; the approximate cost for these will be £30, payable to the tutor during the workshop.
What to bring:
An apron
Pencil & paper
Debbie suggests you have short nails as longer nails can make working with clay just that little bit harder. Please treat your hands to a good quality handcream, as clay is very drying on the hands.
Included on the day:
All other materials not specified for students to bring
Expert tuition
1 to 1 guidance
