    The Jungle Book

    FULL PRICE £15 / CONCESSIONS £12.50

The Corn Exchange Youth Theatre will delight audiences once again as they bring to life Rudyard Kipling’s beloved tale of Mowgli and friends, in this lively and exciting adaptation by Jessica Swale.

Saved from the tiger’s jaws, baby Mowgli is adopted by a wolf family to embark on a journey of discovery to find his place in the animal kingdom, guided by his larger than life friends. But danger lurks around many corners in the jungle, with the ever-looming shadow of the terrifying tiger, Shere Khan. Mowgli must face his nemesis but in doing so, discovers that his greatest challenge lies within; neither a creature of the jungle, nor at home among people, he must find a way to accept who he is and to become who he must be.

Featuring unforgettable songs and directed and designed by a professional team, the Corn Exchange Youth Theatre invite you to join them in the depths of the jungles of India, for a tale of adventure, bravery and self-discovery.

    Hamlet

    ‘Frailty, thy name is woman…’
In a bold, innovative female-led production, The Watermill Ensemble breathe new life into Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy.
The King is dead. Absorbed with grief, Hamlet sees a ghostly figure who speaks
of treachery and insists upon revenge. Hamlet’s mother Gertrude has hastily remarried, Ophelia is rebelling, and the new king Claudius is controlling proceedings from the shadows. As tensions mount and Hamlet’s personal turmoil increasingly conflicts with public duty, the lines between order and chaos in Elsinore begin to blur.
Underscored with live music played by the cast, The Watermill’s resident company apply their daring, collaborative style to Shakespeare’s most enduring play, exploring contemporary themes of identity and authority from multiple points of view.Principal Sponsor

This opulent triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue, celebrating the cities and dance schools of Paris, New York and St. Petersburg, each bound to its own precious stone: emerald, ruby and diamond.

Balanchine built an homage of captivating beauty to the three dance schools that had forged his style, each represented by a contrasting gemstone. Jewels offers a unique occasion to enjoy the genius of choreographer’s visually captivating work performed by some of the world’s most dazzling dancers.

Music Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

    Choerography George Balanchine

Cast The Bolshoi Principals, Soloists and Corps de Ballet

Hungerford Hocktide Festival & Tutti Men

This event may be cancelled due to corona virus, please contact the organisers directly

Way back in the Fourteenth Century, John of Gaunt gave Hungerford special hunting and fishing rights and the festival today is the commemoration and continuation of this by the townsfolk – around 100 properties still have commoners rights and their owners are the Commoners of the court. On Hocktide Day the festivities begin with the appearance of the Bellman on the Town Hall balcony at 8am, summoning the Commoners to Court, then perambulating the town. The special court is held upstairs at the Town Hall in the morning chaired by the Constable, whilst two nattily dressed Tuttimen (who carry flower-decorated poles with an orange on top) call at the commoners’ houses around the town accompanied by the Orangeman and Tutti Wenches,  giving out oranges and asking for donations or kisses en route throughout the day. Tuttimen are so-called regardless of gender! The tasty Commoners Lunch takes place during the afternoon at the Corn Exchange on the ground floor of the Town Hall : expect speeches, toasts and the tasty but lethal Plantagenet Punch. The meal is followed by Shoeing the Colts, during which first-time visitors have a horsehoe nailed to their heel by the blacksmith until they call “Punch”. The residents particularly enjoy watching Colts being wrestled to the ground for their shoeing, but they’re gentler with ladies who get to sit on a chair (or, as in my case, get carried to it!). After the fun and frolics, anchovies on toast are served at the Three Swans across the road from 5pm then further serious drinking takes place with  the return of the Tuttimen from their rounds around 9pm. The local band also play free of charge during the evening at the Corn Exchange.

    TUESDAY 28TH APRIL 2020

    9.45 AM – 3:00PM

Romilla Arber has been baking bread for many years and is passionate about real bread, made traditionally. She firmly believes that good-quality bread doesn’t make you fat! Industrialised, mass produced bread is the perfect example of how our food culture has broken down. It is made with only profit in mind not what is best for the health of the customer.

On this course you will make a variety of breads (there will be plenty to take home) and enjoy a simple lunch with a glass of wine. You too can fall in love with the art of bread making and learn how to make exquisite artisan loaves in your own kitchen.

Romilla is the author or two cookery books and she has won the prestigious Gourmand Best UK Cookbook award for her second book. She is a passionate advocate of eating a balanced diet and in 2008 founded the Food Education Trust with the aim of working with schools to promote the benefits of home-cooked food.

Romilla is the founder and owner of The Honesty Group which includes the Crown and Garter at Inkpen.

‘No-one would have believed in the early years of the twentieth century that this world was being watched…’

But we did believe. We believed that Martians landed in New Jersey. We believed a water tower was an alien war machine. We believed a man walked on the moon. We believe everything the internet trolls tell us and now the end of the world is being broadcast live…

Inspired by H.G. Wells’ sci-fi novel and Orson Welles’ classic radio play, this legendary science fiction thriller is playfully reimagined for our era of Fake News and ‘alternative facts’.

Presented by Rhum and Clay Theatre Company and written with Isley Lynn. Originally commissioned by New Diorama Theatre. Co-produced by Brighton Festival, Home Manchester, New Theatre Royal Portsmouth and Nuffield Southampton Theatres.
