    TUESDAY 3RD MARCH 2020

    10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Romilla Arber tutors this course, which embraces her advocacy of eating less meat in your diet.  For health and environmental reasons it is time to change our attitudes and give vegetables the starring role more often on the dinner table.  It doesn’t have to be dull ad old fashioned as many great cookery writers are demonstrating.  This course will explore several dishes where meat is not used at all or is playing a secondary role.  You will gain confidence to treat vegetables in a much more adventurous fashion.  It really doesn’t have to be a nut roast !

    Let’s start… at the end.

Bob and Bernard have only two things in common: they’re both dying… and they’re not going down without a fight. So, with a bottle of Bollinger and the keys to Bernard’s Bentley in hand, they decide to hit the road, and take on one final, death-defying adventure. But when time really does start to run out, can Bob and Bernard accept the inevitable? Can their growing friendship make the difference? And by seeing the end in sight, can they truly value living?

Funny and poignant in equal measure, Dead Good is the hotly anticipated new production from full mask maestros, Vamos Theatre. Created in collaboration with palliative care patients and specialists, it’s a gloriously witty, wordless theatre show about the ultimate shared experience.

A circus, dance and theatre production where blind devotion meets desperate ambition.

It’s their final gig. Sandy and Bruno met in the seventies to form a band. She was fame hungry; he was doomed to follow her to the ends of the earth. A one-hit wonder, they’re now washed up, cruelly forgotten. For one night only, they are dusting off their old costumes and preparing for one last gig. Is this their last chance of fame? What will the audience decide?

The Band is a quirky and humorous production with striking visuals and a rousing soundtrack from Levantes Dance Theatre, a company which blends circus, dance and theatre with vibrant aesthetics. Working in collaboration with Ockham Razor’s Tina Koch, the performers are Levantes’ artistic director and designer, Eleni Edipidi and Nathan Johnston, who each bring their unique physicality to the show.

Over the last few years they have received rave reviews from ‘The Stage’ newspaper, the U.K.s leading Fleetwood Mac fansites, the official Stevie Nicks website; and from ecstatic audiences wherever the band played, wowing audiences as far afield as Dubai, St. Tropez, the Cayman Islands and Monte Carlo, and twice selling out the world-famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

Fleetwood Bac have also been rated by The Times newspaper as one of the U.K.’s top 5 tributes, alongside The Bootleg Beatles, Bjorn Again and the Counterfeit Stones.

Fans include original Mac bassist and biographer Bob Brunning, who joined the band several times on stage, and Peter Green’s official biographer Martin Celmins.

The sound, the look, the mystical atmosphere and on-stage chemistry are all portrayed with the passion and energy that got the seal of approval from ‘Big Daddy’ Mick, and built up an excellent reputation amongst Mac fans through numerous tours, festival appearances, corporate events and TV and radio slots all over the U.K. and Europe

Cathal Garvey and Newbury Choral Society present their Spring Season Concert at St Nicolas Church on Saturday March 21st.

    The Programme is :-

    Haydn: Te Deum
    Mozart: Symphony No.36 (Linz)
    Haydn: Heiligmesse

Lovers of the classical period will find much to delight them in Newbury Choral Society’s next concert, which features two giants of a prolific and exciting time in Austrian music. Under the expert guidance of Cathal Garvey, now a familiar figure to Newbury concert-goers, the choir will sing two works by Joseph Haydn, accompanied by London Ulysses Orchestra, who will also perform the Linz Symphony (No.36) by his friend and protégé, Mozart.

Haydn returned in triumph to Vienna from London in 1795, having cemented his reputation as a composer of symphonies and string quartets. He then turned his remarkable talents to the composition of vocal and choral works, including his famous oratorios, his six late masses and the Te Deum for the Empress Maria Therese. Haydn was a welcome visitor at the imperial palace in Vienna, where he would often accompany the Empress to indulge her great love of singing. She appears to have asked repeatedly for a specially composed work of sacred music, which Haydn finally provided in the form of the Te Deum, first performed, from what we can glean from the records, during a visit of Lord Nelson to Eisenstadt in 1800.

Haydn’s later masses were composed for the Esterházy family, his old employers, to celebrate the name day of Princess Maria Von Hermenegild. The mass, officially titled Missa Sancti Bernardi Von Offida, was first performed in 1796. As Wikipedia points out, “the Sanctus section of the mass is a setting of a then-popular Austrian tune to the German translation of Sanctus, “Heilig”. The Mass takes its popular German title Heiligmesse from this section. The mass includes what are, for the time, unexpected modulations and innovative use of third relations that would influence later mass settings by nineteenth-century composers.”

Mozart and his wife stayed in Linz on their way back from Vienna to Salzburg in 1783, only to discover that, when he heard of their impending visit, a local dignitary had advertised a concert to include a symphony from the genius. In four days he wrote and fully orchestrated Symphony No.36 in C Major which was also subsequently premiered in Vienna the following year.

Beethoven’s only opera is a masterpiece, an uplifting story of risk and triumph.

In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as ‘Fidelio’) who daringly sets out to rescue him.

Set in strong counterpoint are the ingredients of domestic intrigue, determined love and the cruelty of an oppressive regime. The music is transcendent throughout and includes the famous Act I Quartet, the Prisoners’ Chorus and Florestan’s impassioned Act II cry in the darkness and vision of hope. Tobias Kratzer’s new staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolutionary ‘Terror’ and our own time to illuminate Fidelio’s inspiring message of shared humanity.

On the eve of her fortieth year, Edie Rose is finally hosting her own show. To assist, she conjures up two versions of herself – one younger and one older. Together the three Edies (aged 20, 40 and 60) re-examine the loves, hopes and losses of her life using dark, mysterious magic.

The Disappearing Act is based on true stories from female performers and is an alchemy of perspectives: the hopefulness of youth, the wisdom of experience and the disappearing act of ageing.

    Elles Bailey

2019 has been a hell of a year for the super-smoky-voiced, hard-working, far-touring chanteuse Elles Bailey. On 8th March, she dropped her eagerly-anticipated second album ‘Road I Call Home’ to rave reviews, with the album charting in the Official UK Country Charts & Americana charts, gaining over 1.3 million streams since its release and reaching No.1 on the Amazon Blues Bestseller chart.

Like its chart-topping predecessor, ‘Road I Call Home’ features co-writing contributions from high-calibre collaborators, including British hit-making legend and Ivor Novello Award winner Roger Cook, storied Memphis and Nashville giant Bobby Wood, as well as Dan Auerbach (of Akron, Ohio powerhouses The Black Keys) on the infectious  ‘Little Piece of Heaven’

As a self-confessed ‘rolling stone’ – Elles genuinely does call ‘the road’ home. She’s continued her wide-ranging headline touring throughout the UK and Europe and was also special guest support for Grammy Award winner Mike Farris, Martin Harley, The Kris Barras Band and King King.

2018/19 has also seen Elles Bailey move up the festival listings becoming a featured artist at key festivals including Black Deer, Swing Wesplaar, Ramblin’ Man Fair, & The GB R&B Festival. She also headed stateside for the International House Of Songs Summit in Arkansas and played Nashville’s Americana Fest.

2020 sees Elles touring the UK in March, Germany in April and playing many more international stages including taking to the high seas for the Joe Bonamassa ‘Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea’ cruise alongside the man himself, Joe Bonamassa, King King, Samantha Fish,Walter Trout and many more.

As well as being an international touring artist, playing sold out shows all over the world, Elles is a self confessed DIY artist and If ever there was a fine example of the Do It Yourself nature of the music business then Elles Bailey is it. From rather humble beginnings Elles has by dint of hard work and talent smashed through and past much bigger artists and bigger industry players – not least major record labels – by taking time and effort to really understand the brave new world that is today’s landscape, being brave, breaking rules, making a few mistakes (always part of the learning process) and just powering through obstacles and doing whatever it takes. Her work ethic, both on the road, at shows, and in front of her spreadsheets is nothing short of phenomenal.

No surprise but 2020 is full of tour dates for Miss Bailey on he road that she really does call home. When she arrives near you, don’t think twice, get there.  A great evening and a long musical friendship will be waiting.

KEITH JAMES – THE MUSIC OF YUSUF – CAT STEVENS

    8pm Croft Hall – Tickets £16

The amassed body of music from this hugely popular and sincerely adored singer/songwriter made for a collection
of ‘must have’ records across a whole generation. Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were on everyone’s
turntables and on every radio station, live versions are played in concerts, bars and on the world’s beaches to this day.
Songs such as Wild World, Father and Son, Moonshadow and Where do the Children play have been covered by hundreds of Artists worldwide.

This concert will give you far more than just the music itself…

There is a huge amount of insight into the history and the spirit of Cat Stevens; his early pop career, his illness that changed him

existentially and spiritually into an incredibly thoughtful and loving singer songwriter; such that his songs are remembered instantly

for their uplifting sense of truth, promise and human fragility.

Much to talk about about the background and embryo of each song.. some of which will be performed as all of us remember..

and some, carefully and intuitively re-voiced – respectfully re-interpreted with rich, balanced guitar arrangements and a more personal vocal approach.

Yusuf campaigns on many educational and humanitarian issues,he was awarded the ‘Man of Peace’ award by the Nobel Peace Laureates.
In 2015 and he received the Lifetime achievement award from BBC Radio 2 and the Ivor Novello Award for outstanding song collection.
He has received two honorary doctorates and awards for promoting peace from two organisations founded by Mikhail Gorbachev.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014

Basildon Park – Parkland run at Basildon Park

Put your running shoes on every Tuesday to join our volunteers on a run around the park and woodland trails. Every Tuesday some of our volunteers will be leading a run along the trails at Basildon Park. The run will usually be between 8-10km and last about an hour, so we recommend this for runners with some ability only.

This is a great way to see the park in all it’s beauty whilst keeping fit and being active. Booking Not Needed.

A Event – Start 10:30. End 11:30. Free Event but Normal Admission Charges Apply. Meet in the Stableyard after the visitor entrance to the park. Check website for latest information.
