    Caz Croxford

Cat Croxford is an artist based in in West Berkshire, UK .  She finds her inspiration from the Berkshire Downs near to where she lives and from her travels to European forests and gardens.

Cat paints the changing light of the seasons, and she aims to capture in her paintings the strong contrasts, rich colours and natural patterns of the woodlands. Her intent is that every painting is the beginning of a story, a pathway or window that leads to something hidden in our imagination or memories. “I want people to be able to walk in to my paintings, to feel a real sense of space in the natural world; perhap even recognise the trees and woods from their own lives and memories, to be able to relate to the paintings in a way that makes them feel that they have been there, that they know it, that they belong there”.

She also enjoys painting floral and foliage subjects, recently inspired by visits to Giverny, France. Whilst these paintings are a lot more detailed in appearance, closer inspection shows an expressive brushstroke still evident and an exciting interpretation of colour.

Cat lives in Ashampstead and will have a gazebo in her  garden ( You can contact her for further details on catcroxford@gmail.com) and her studio will be open, full of artwork and cards.  She will also be demonstrating during visits.  There will also be cake (a huge incentive, she hopes  ….) . Cat paints woodland scenes of the local area (mainly Ashampstead Common).

    14:00 -16:00
    19/05/2021-20/05/2021

Spring Garden Visit to the Dell, Bucklebury | West Berkshire Villages

Online Lecture on Wednesday, 19th May at 2pm
followed by the visit on Thursday, 20th May at 2pm

As this will be our first garden visit since the imposition of COVID restrictions, please be understanding if there are last minutes alterations in the arrangements for this visit.  We will make whatever changes are needed to remain in compliance with changing government pandemic restrictions.

The Dell is part of the garden created for Bucklebury Place by Arthur Warwick Sutton (1854 – 1925) who was a partner in Sutton Seeds.  Much of what we know about the Bucklebury Place gardens comes from articles in a weekly magazine called Gardening World.  Arthur Sutton’s pride and joy was a part of the garden called the Dell.  He took advantage of the natural topography to create a woodland glade with two ponds and a cascade between them.   The Dell was planted with a variety of shrubs and showy flowers within a shelter belt of trees and many spring bulbs.   The fact that the Dell has survived is remarkable.  It has developed into a beautiful woodland glade with many of its original features. The bulbs that were planted originally have been left to multiply and now produce a dazzling spring display.

This event is in two parts:  on Wednesday, Janet Fuller will provide a brief online lecture about the history of the Dell, including photos of it when it was first planted.  This will provide context for the visit on the following day.  The visit will be hosted by the owner of the Dell, Tony Billington, who will lead the tour and be available to answer questions.  Depending on COVID restrictions, afternoon tea may be available but it is not included in the ticket price.

There is a maximum number of 30 people for this event so please book early! Until 17 April, only BGT members may book. Thereafter bookings from non-members are welcomed.

NOTE:  There are uneven surfaces and stairs, so stout shoes will be required.  If it is raining or has been raining just before the visit, the Dell will be damp and paths may be slippery.  A map with directions to the Dell will be provided to those people who book along with the COVID safety guidelines.  There is ample parking and there is a toilet available in the grounds.

Cost: Tickets are £10 for members and £15 for non-members.  A Zoom link for the lecture will be send to you a few days before the 19th May along with directions to the Dell.  The lecture will last approximately 30 minutes followed by questions.  The lecture will not be recorded.

    Faux Calligraphy & Slate Design

This workshop explores the wonderful art of lettering using faux calligraphy techniques; a lettering technique to imitate the style of modern calligraphy using everyday pens. The workshop will begin with an overview of faux calligraphy and some lettering exercises to help you create letter forms. You will then use these skills to create your own wording on a slate sign, with a few words of your choosing using chalk pens. Choose to use this sign for your home or garden, as a snack platter or make this as a special wedding, anniversary, new home, birthday or Christmas gift for someone special.

This technique is ideal for individuals who would like to explore modern calligraphy more, or who struggle using a pointed pen, but want to create a similar lettering style that a nib produces.

All materials are provided. Simply arrive with an idea of what to put onto your slate piece. For your planning, the slate measures 28cm x 21cm.

    Let’s make letters look beautiful!

At the ‘Time of the Very Beginnings’ the land is bustling with beasts, the sky is filled with birds and the ocean is teeming with fish. But there is one small problem: all the animals look the same!

The wise ‘Eldest Magician’ sends them out into the world to find their individuality. Everything is just so until Pau Amma the Crab starts playing with the ocean, causing terrible floods that put the other animals in danger. The brave Elephant’s Child embarks on a journey to challenge and overcome Pau Amma, but can she do it alone?

This wondrous family musical blends five of Rudyard Kipling’s Just So stories to tell a tale of courage, friendship and the power of an individual to make a difference.

A spirited semi-staged concert that will take you back to nature this summer, join us for a song-filled journey through the jungle in the relaxed atmosphere of The Watermill gardens.

ONSITE Have A Go at Loom Weaving – Wed 26th May 2021

This onsite, loom weaving workshop is designed for beginners and improvers

    Workshop Details
Gain an insight into this fascinating craft by weaving on two types of table loom. One sample will be woven on a rigid heddle loom and the second on a four-shaft loom. The first will give you an idea of what is involved in weaving a floor rug or a small picture and the second will be the type of weaving used for fabrics.

The rigid heddle loom will be set up so the weft will completely cover the warp (the threads on the loom). You can produce stripes and spots using two colours. Alternatively, you could experiment with techniques needed to produce a simple picture. The 4-shaft loom will be set up with the warp closer together so it contributes to the design and produces a balanced weave. You will start by lifting two shafts at a time to produce diagonal lines and zigzags. The lifting sequence can then be changed to produce diamonds and many other patterns.

The samples can be made up into small bags or used as mats. You will see examples of a few of the many types of weaving that can be woven on these looms.
