It’s been really lovely hearing your stories about the young adults and kids in your lives, and how interested some of them are already in our wildlife here in the UK. And also, to hear how some parents are actively encouraging their youngsters to take and interest and learn more about nature and the outdoors!

This Half Term, starting today and running until end of day Thursday 25th Feb, I am running a “draw your favorite wildlife” competition! There are two groupings: age 8 and under, and then age 9 – 16. You can see in the images the prizes for each banding:

0 – 8 years: A National Geographic “Be a Bird Spotter” guide suitable for the younger age groups along with some explorer green 8×21 mini binoculars, to get them interested in seeing more of the wildlife around them.

9 – 16 years: A fantastic book called “Tom Song Thrush and the Big Hush” written by Oxfordshire author Barry Tindall, all about a young Song Thrush, his friends and his mission to stop the decline of bird species caused by the “unfeathered” humans. Coupled with this are a pair of 12×42 adult sized binoculars, to enable a really close-up view of our amazing wildlife.

  1. Like and Share this Post – in your newsfeed, in your stories, or in any groups where you think people might have youngsters that will want to enter!
  2. Tag three friends you think will be interested in the competition
  3. Email in your child’s entry to info@goringgapwildlifewalks.co.uk.

  1. As our business relies a lot on word of mouth and referral, we would ask you to share our competition with at least three friends who might be interested in this and getting youngsters involved
  2. Email in your child’s entry to info@goringgapwildlifewalks.co.uk.

Scanned copies of course acceptable given the circumstances – if not sure how to scan it to me, let me know and we can arrange for you to send a photo of it via Whatsapp! I’ll just need the picture, age and name of your child.

We will be asking for the help of 2 well respected local business owners and parents, to help us choose the winner in each category. We will then announce this on Social Media and by email next weekend!

Looking forward to seeing your amazing pictures!

Spring Special Guided Tours

“Is the spring coming?” he said. “What is it like?”…
“It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine…”

Frances Hodgson Burnett, “The Secret Garden”

The original film of “The Secret Garden” with Maggie Smith was partly filmed at Highclere. It is, like Spring, a story of hope and these early months of the cycle of the year are a time of promise as a well as a time for work in the gardens.

Every guided tour, however, begins in the Castle and these tour dates offer a unique experience for a limited number of guests. On arrival, you will be welcomed into the Saloon, which is at the heart of the Castle very familiar from the series and film “Downton Abbey”.

Highclere Castle has been part of the Carnarvon family since the late seventeenth century. Whilst rich in treasure and steeped in history, Highclere retains the warmth and welcome of a much-loved family home

The tour will take you through the State Rooms, the Gallery and Castle Bedrooms all part of a real and fictional home. Our guides have exceptional knowledge of the building, works of art and furniture and also of stories behind the scenes from acting as stewards throughout filming.

After the Castle Tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the Egyptian Exhibition, located in our atmospheric Castle cellars. The Exhibition tells the story of, and contains antiquities from, the tombs that were discovered in Egypt by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter nearly 100 years ago.

Weather permitting Paul, the Head Gardener and his gardening team, will be on hand to explain the structure of the Gardens and their Spring plans.

Tickets are £120 per person which includes a guided tour of the Castle with an opportunity to view the Grounds and Gardens, complimentary tea and refreshments and a complimentary signed “Lady Catherine and the Real Downton Abbey”.

Morning Tours: your tour time will begin at 10:30am and with a departure of 1:30pm.
Afternoon Tours: your tour time will begin at 1:30pm with a 4:30pm departure time.

Please note that the gates to the Castle and Grounds will open no more than 30 minutes prior to your ticket time and grounds close promptly at 5.00pm. The dress code for the event is smart/casual; please wear sensible footwear for the Gardens.
