The Canal & River Trust

To mark Armistice Day we’ve been investigating the connections between war and the waterways, and the impact that war had on the people, places and heritage of our canals and rivers.

The dedicated heritage team share their stories of how war has left its mark on our canals and rivers.
Most people are familiar with the ‘Land Girls’; women who volunteered to work the land to aid the war effort during World War Two. Less well known, however, are their canal-based equivalents; known undeservedly as the ‘Idle Women’.
