    Tutor: Shirley Eccles

    10.30 – 4.30

We will make three items during the day – glass jewellery and two kiln-fired pieces (a bowl/platter and either a coaster, window hanging or a wind chime). You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials.

Project 1: You will create fused glass jewellery pieces and cabochons to use as pendants, earrings, fridge magnets or keyring holders.  This will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with a variety of glass materials including frits, confetti and glass stringers etc. and see how they react once fired.

Project 2: During this project you will be able to develop your glass cutting skills using both a strip cutter or cutting freehand. You can create either a small wall hanging, coasters, or a wind chime. You will also be able to experiment melting stringers over a flame to add to your design ideas.

Project 3: You will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter. Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for this process. This technique will include two firings, both Fusing and Slumping.

In Virtues words ‘colour is a distraction’ and he is well known for his ‘London Paintings’ which were displayed in The National Gallery and focused on the London skyline, using easily distinguishable landmarks from the capital.

We will look at designs you can create, either earrings or a pendant, then show you how to make a moulding compound which will be used to cast your chosen object or texture. The PMC is then pressed into the mould, fired with a torch and polished using a rotary polisher. Liver of sulphur may then be applied to enhance the texture/design. The pieces will then be finished – by forging silver ear wires and piercing the final piece to create earrings or creating a hanging bail for a pendant. You will be amazed at the results you will achieve!

Hamstead Park Revealed – a Guided Walk

Please be understanding if there are last minute alterations in the arrangements for this walk if the relaxation of COVID restrictions happens more slowly than the current government expectations.  We will make whatever changes are needed to remain in compliance with government restrictions.

The highlight of this walk is the historic Hamstead Park, near Newbury. We discover the fascinating history of this former medieval deer park with royal connections and which, for many years, was part of the Lord Craven estate. Click to read BGT’s Research Paper on Hamstead Park.

    Walk description

Our walk starts out from the Red House pub in Marsh Benham.  The walk follows the meandering path up to the site of Hamstead Lodge taking in castle mottes and the old manor fishponds. Passing the Lodge along the tree lined drive we then descend along a pretty path overhung by hazel coppice around the Park perimeter (which is often muddy).

We briefly leave the Park along Ashtree Plantation but soon re-enter to follow the park pale towards the church.  Then, pairs of enigmatic gateposts come into view to give a clue to the existence of a house, since long vanished.  We retrace our steps to the Red House.

    What will it be like?

This is a 4.5 mile walk that will take approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.  Our guide will be Philippa from Pipsticks Walks.  We will take a short mid-walk refreshment break and there will be stops along the way to look at features of interest.

The terrain is gently undulating (total ascent: 276 ft).  Our route mostly follows good paths, drives and tracks with two short sections on road, but one section may be rough and muddy.  There is one stile.

Dogs are not permitted on this walk.

There are no facilities or toilets on route.  Please bring drink and snacks for personal consumption during the walk.

Please read the walk description carefully. Bookings and your participation on the day are accepted on the understanding that you, and those you are booking on behalf of, are medically and physically fit to take part in the activity.  If you have any concerns you should discuss these with us prior to booking and participating.

    Time and where to meet?

10.00 am meet probably at The Red House pub, Marsh Benham, RG20 8LY (OS Map Exp 158 GR: SU 426 675).  This will depend on whether the pub has re-opened and availability.  Arrangements for parking and possibly some post-walk refreshments at the Red House pub (not included) will be sent out to those who book.

Booking: There are two possible dates. Numbers are strictly limited to 12 people per day. Please book by 14th June so that final arrangements can be made. Full instructions, including any necessary COVID arrangements, will be sent to you prior to the walk.

    Bookbinding- Buttonhole Stitch ONLINE

In this workshop Janina will take you through you all the steps involved in making a buttonhole book with a cutaway spine.  The project will be a hard back landscape A6 book, with paper cover, book cloth detailing, cutaway spine, and buttonhole stitching. We will start by cutting greyboard into the correct size for the book and making the cut away element. The front and back covers will be covered with a decorative paper, and the spine and hinge areas reinforced with bookcloth. The cover will then be placed under weight to dry flat. Next we will trim the inside pages to fit (using the fold and slice technique), nesting the folded pages into ‘signatures’. Once we have made holes in the paper for sewing, the final stage will be to sew the pages into the book cover using a long buttonhole stitch and linen thread.

All the stages will be fully demonstrated as a group, with plenty of help and support on an individual basis during the day.

Blithe Spirit | West Berkshire Villagers

This event will take place at Thatcham Cricket Club

BlackBox Theatre Company presents an outdoor production of Noël Coward’s timeless classic, Blithe Spirit.

Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, has had two wives – one is most certainly living and the other is most certainly dead! However, after a rather eventful séance held by the eccentric Madame Arcati, the ghost of his temperamental first wife has come to visit, much to the consternation of the current Mrs Condomine. Two wives, ‘living’ under the same roof? What could possibly go wrong?

The play was first produced at The Manchester Opera House in 1941 and over the years ‘Coward’s masterpiece’ has become a firm favourite with theatre audiences around the world. It has been made into two films, the first starring Rex Harrison and the formidable Margaret Rutherford and most recently a Hollywood retelling starring Judi Dench as Madame Arcati.

Please remember to bring your face covering with you as visitors over the age of 11 are required to wear them on arrival. We will be limiting the number of people admitted to each event to ensure appropriate social distancing between each group  and once you have been seated face coverings may be removed.

I hope to inspire you with some new ideas and techniques to take away with you and apply to your own work.

You will be working from your own image, either from an I-pad OR you can use a photograph at least 5” x 5”.  The animal’s eyes must be clear and in focus. Crop your image so that it is square.  The head of the animal should take up most of the frame. Paradise Lost (Lies Unopened Beside Me)

There is a possibility that God made everything because he was terrified of doing nothing. Here is a re-telling of the story of the beginning of everything inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost – told through words, music and the easily misunderstood medium of dance. A show for anyone who has created anything (child, garden, paper aeroplane) and then watched it spiral out of control.

Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me) is a one-man adaptation of Milton’s epic poem and is conceived, directed and performed by Ben Duke for Lost Dog. The show premiered in May 2015 at Battersea Arts Centre, London as part of A Nation’s Theatre and went on to run at Summerhall as part the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2015 where it received high critical acclaim.

Paradise Lost was shortlisted for a 2015 Total Theatre Award in the Innovation, Experimentation and Playing with Form category and Ben Duke won the 2015 National Dance Award for Outstanding Male Performance. Since 2015 the show has toured to over 60 venues both nationally and internationally including 14 village halls as part of the Rural Touring Dance Initiative. In 2019 The Guardian named Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me) in its list of the Top Ten Dance Performances of the 21st Century.

The tutor will give a short presentation on the art of Tezhip, meaning ‘ornamenting with gold’ using non-figurative floral motifs. Historically Islamic manuscripts were adorned with patterns with paints made from natural pigments and illuminated with real 24 carat gold to glorify the calligraphic text. In the workshop participants will explore the principles of symmetry in stylised Islamic floral motifs known as ‘penc’ and ‘hatai’ flowers.  Participants will be shown how to prepare gold paint from 24ct gold leaf, known as ‘shell gold’ and be introduced to traditional paper preparation methods. Students will then be taught the traditional ‘halkar’ shading technique to paint and gild a tezhip floral composition prepared by the tutor.
