  • Beautiful Breads @ Honesty Cookery School

Beautiful Breads @ Honesty Cookery School

    09:45 -15:00
    04/05/2021
The Barn North Sydmonton House, North Sydmonton, Newbury, Hampshire RG20 4UL

    Beautiful Breads

Romilla Arber has been baking bread for many years and is passionate about real bread, made traditionally. She firmly believes that good-quality bread doesn’t make you fat! Industrialised, mass produced bread is the perfect example of how our food culture has broken down. It is made with only profit in mind not what is best for the health of the customer.

On this course you will make a variety of breads (there will be plenty to take home) and enjoy a simple lunch with a glass of wine. You too can fall in love with the art of bread making and learn how to make exquisite artisan loaves in your own kitchen.

Romilla is the author or two cookery books and she has won the prestigious Gourmand Best UK Cookbook award for her second book. She is a passionate advocate of eating a balanced diet and in 2008 founded the Food Education Trust with the aim of working with schools to promote the benefits of home-cooked food.

Romilla is the founder and owner of The Honesty Group which includes the Crown and Garter at Inkpen and the Hartley Arms at Donnington.

Maximum number 8.  All level of abilities welcome.

Proving that drive in cinema isn’t just a 2020 thing, The Luna Drive In Cinema is back and better than ever for 2021!

Merging incredible state of the art technology with the old school glamour of the classic drive in format, and all set to come to the country’s most stunning backdrops. This is quite simply the ultimate big-screen experience that you can enjoy in a safe, socially distanced way from the comfort of your car. With in-car speaker boxes (bye-bye flat batteries!), giant high-definition screens showing a line up of classic, feel-good movies, and utterly delicious food available on site, it’s time to get out of the house and have your first big night out in a very, very long time – we can’t wait to see you there!

The Luna Drive In utilises state of the art cinema equipment, combining the highest definition outdoor LED screens and high-grade digital projectors offering full HD picture quality with an incredible wireless transmission of sound straight into the vehicle, to produce an exceptional cinematic experience.

Our incredible in-car speaker solution means there’s no need to tune your car radio and risk running the battery flat. Instead, each guest is given a speaker box on arrival that sits on your dashboard (and is sanitised between screenings), that relays full frequency wireless sound directly into the car. It’s battery-powered and even has a touch screen on the front that lets you read about the film, see information on our partners and even check what food and drink is available and where the toilet facilities are located. We think this is the technology that really brings the drive in experience into the 21st century and we know you’ll love it!

    FOOD AND DRINK

We have a fantastic selection of food and drink available either as a pre-order with your tickets or ordered from your car on the night using your smartphone.

We’ve developed a fantastic web-based app (so no need to download anything!) accessed by scanning a QR code found on your speaker box. You can then view the full menu of hot food, tasty treats as well as a full bar offering. Full details about ordering from your car during the event will also be displayed on the big screen prior to the film.

When you place an order, it will be sent straight to our team, who will get to work on preparing your orders right away, whilst adhering to strict health and hygiene standards. Once your order is ready, you’ll receive a text to say your piping hot food is ready to collect – it couldn’t be more simple!

Or if you’re in the mood to treat yourself from the start, you can pre-order one of our delicious food hampers with your tickets. They are filled with tasty treats, perfect for munching on during the film. Pre-ordered Luna hampers are handed out with your speaker boxes on arrival at the venue, so you’re ready to tuck in as soon as you park. Yum!

    SOCIAL DISTANCING

The Luna Drive In Cinema has been classified as being “Covid-19 Secure”.

The event is fully compliant with all government advice on social distancing. In fact, there’s no need to get out of your car at all during the screening if you don’t want to.

We will have large walkways throughout the site so should you need to visit the toilet facilities or collect your food order, you will be able to do so without coming into close contact with anyone else.

The toilets are all in individual units, spaced a minimum of 2m apart. They will be cleaned and sanitised regularly, there will be ample hand sanitising facilities available.

The Food and Drink collection point is also designed for the maintaining of social distancing, and we ask customers to wear masks when going to collect their food.

Any staff members interacting with the public will be wearing the appropriate PPE.

ONSITE Have A Go at Loom Weaving – Wed 26th May 2021

    SKU: AP260521-6
    £95.00
    Tutor Angela Pawlyn
    10am- 4pm

This onsite, loom weaving workshop is designed for beginners and improvers

    Workshop Details
Gain an insight into this fascinating craft by weaving on two types of table loom. One sample will be woven on a rigid heddle loom and the second on a four-shaft loom. The first will give you an idea of what is involved in weaving a floor rug or a small picture and the second will be the type of weaving used for fabrics.

The rigid heddle loom will be set up so the weft will completely cover the warp (the threads on the loom). You can produce stripes and spots using two colours. Alternatively, you could experiment with techniques needed to produce a simple picture. The 4-shaft loom will be set up with the warp closer together so it contributes to the design and produces a balanced weave. You will start by lifting two shafts at a time to produce diagonal lines and zigzags. The lifting sequence can then be changed to produce diamonds and many other patterns.

The samples can be made up into small bags or used as mats. You will see examples of a few of the many types of weaving that can be woven on these looms.

    Skills/Techniques Covered

    • basic weaving vocabulary
    • understanding the difference between balanced weave and weft-faced weave
    • weaving twill patterns
    • keeping edges neat when using two shuttles
    • finishing off weaving

    Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee. The approximate cost of these will be £5. The tutor would like you to donate the sum to one of the ARDINGTON’S supported charities.

    Tutor: Karen Carter

    Thurs 27th May 10am – 12pm workshop demo with Q&A
    (UK timings)

This LivePlus™ online linoprinting workshop is designed for absolute beginners and forms the perfect lead-in to Karen’s three-part Linoprinting: Beyond the Basics course later in the year.

    Workshop details
In this 2-hour beginners workshop, Karen will show you that linoprinting is a great technique to do at home…easy to learn, using minimal equipment with a whole host of variations available once you’ve got the basics.

Forget the blunt tools and tough lino of school days and enjoy the process of linoprinting with soft-cut lino and a whole range of approaches. Perfect for printing cards, wall art, fabric etc.

This session will include all the basics; tools, materials, elements of design, different cutting techniques, and inking & printing in black & white.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop:

    • A range of cutting techniques
    • Materials & tools for getting the best results when hand-printing
    • Basic inking & printing techniques

    Materials & equipment list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.  This list is for guidance only – you can improvise and source your own materials, either in advance or once you have seen the LivePlus workshop, giving you maximum flexibility to choose how you would like to approach this craft.

You needn’t have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

    • Lightweight cartridge paper or Japanese paper (Shoji is great and can also be used for Drypoint, Monoprint & Collagraph when printing by hand) – available from Intaglio Printmakers or Handprinted
    • Caligo Safewash Relief Ink – Black OR a black water-based block-printing ink (make sure they are ‘over-printable’ for layered work)…these are generally cheaper but not as versatile.
    • Softcut or Easy-cut Lino (A5 size is good for starters and can be cut to square, long thin etc)
    • Set of linocutting tools
    • Roller or brayer
  • Gel Plate Printing Techniques

    Gel Plate Printing Techniques

    10.00 – 4.00

If you have no idea what gel plate printing is, have a gel plate and don’t know what to do with it, or want a refresher on some of the many printing techniques, then this is the workshop for you. A gel plate is a slightly squishy surface which is absolutely perfect for making monoprints. Be warned it is an extremely addictive process! In this workshop we will include mark making, direct painting, stencilling, stamping, and magazine image transfers. These techniques can be used for representational work or completely abstract pieces. Be prepared to experiment and you will go home with an arm full of prints! Suitable for all levels of experience.

    What to bring:

    • If you have your own gel plate please bring it, otherwise gel plates will be available for loan on the day. There are two main brands Gelli Arts and Gel Press, and these work well with acrylic paints. There is a third brand, Speedball, and if you have one of these then you will need to bring Speedball inks, rather than acrylic paints

    • Acrylic paint in your choice of colours (eg primaries, black, white and some metallics and perhaps something wacky such as fluorescent pink)

    • Student grade or craft paint is fine. Pebeo and Hobbycraft brands work well and are a good price. Paint with bits in (eg glitter) should not be used

    • Roller (or brayer)

    • Paper – please bring about 40 to 50 sheets of paper to print on, eg printer paper, black and coloured paper, text or music paper, smooth cartridge, smooth card, sugar paper, newsprint. Smooth and/or absorbent papers work best. Please be aware that very textured papers and photo papers do not work well for printing on

    • A couple of paint brushes (these will be used with acrylic paint)

    • Water jar

    • Baby wipes

Gel plates will also be available to buy on the day. If you would like to buy one please contact us in advance to reserve.

    Included on the day:

    • Any other materials not specified for the students to bring

    • Expert tuition

    • 1 to 1 guidance

    • Detailed demonstrations

    • A selection of tea, freshly brewed coffee, biscuits and delicious cakes

And of course you take your wonderful creations from the day. If you share any photographs of your day here and/or your finished work, we’d love to see them so please tag us @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops or use the hashtag #micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops.

    LAST 1 REMAINING

    10.00 – 4.00

Using simplification, mark-making and a loose impressionistic approach we will learn how to tackle a busy subject and make it manageable!

We will create a collaged ground using text, tissue and patterned papers as the starting point for our image. We will then work over this with layers of acrylic paint – spattering, dripping, and scraping to create a loose impression of a harbour scene, adding more collage elements as we need them.

Further layers of paint, simple ways to depict boats and adding detail and linework with pen, ink and pastel make the whole image come alive. A fun mixed media approach suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to work in a free and forgiving way… if you don’t like a bit just cover it up with more collage!

What to bring: Heavy watercolour paper (approx. 350gsm) or mountboard / back of sketchpad (painted white if you’re using this) or MDF (painted white).

Lightweight patterned & plain papers for collage  – whatever you have. Drawing pencil, Waterproof fineliner pen in a dark colour or dark acrylic ink and a dip pen or fine brush.  A waterproof white pen or ink would be useful but not essential (Posca pens are great). Oil pastels / wax crayons – whatever you have (don’t buy specially). Acrylic matt medium (the gel sort, not the fluid medium– Winsor & Newton, Pebeo & Liquitex all make one).

Acrylic paints – whatever you have – if buying specially just buy primary colours and white. Mixing palette, brushes (whatever you have), kitchen sponge, small offcuts off cardboard / old credit card / small roller if you have one (not essential). Kitchen roll, water pot, Scissors & craft knife.

Found objects for printing such as bubble wrap, ribbed card, anything with an interesting texture or pattern (wallpaper, food packaging etc). Inspiration / source material / sketches of landscapes (the tutor will also bring some images as starting points).

    Included on the day:

    –        Any other materials not specified for the students to bring

    –        Expert tuition

    –        1 to 1 guidance

    –        Detailed demonstrations
